DCR program helps
communities grow urban forests
By Barbara Taormina
The city and the Canopy
M
alden’s tree advocates received
some support and
advice this week from Julie
Coop, coordinator of the Department
of Conservation and
Recreation’s Urban and Community
Forestry program.
Ward 4 Councillor Ryan
O’Malley, chairman of the City
Council’s Community Forestry
Program Advisory Committee,
arranged the presentation to
learn more about what type of
help the state off ers with urban
forestry programs. Coop
explained how her program
works, and the different resources
and grants available
to communities looking for
help managing their trees.
“Our aim is to assist communities
and nonprofi t groups
in protecting, growing and
managing community trees
and forest ecosystems,†Coop
told committee members. She
added that the program’s goal
is to improve the environment
and enhance the livability of
communities throughout the
state.
Collective, a citizens’ advocacy
group, have teamed up
and applied for a DCR grant
to conduct an inventory of the
city’s street trees.
“The application is still being
reviewed, but we should
find out if we’ll receive it
within the next month,†said
O’Malley, adding that the inventory
the city started years
ago is incomplete and out
of date.
Coop said the forestry program
provides training and
technical assistance to cities
and towns. “We will respond
to what a community is wanting,â€
said Coop, adding that
the standard workshops focus
on tree inventories, proper
planting methods, tree identifi
cation and i-Tree, software
that lets a community assess
its community trees.
Malden is also a candidate
for the Greening the Gateway
Cities program, which was developed
to help cut household
energy use for heating
and cooling. The program,
which plants trees predominately
on private property,
targets neighborhoods with
older houses surrounded by
a lower tree canopy and subject
to high wind speeds. Tree
plantings are concentrated in
Environmental Justice neighborhoods
to benefi t residents
most in need.
According to the research
behind the program, trees can
signifi cantly cut summertime
cooling costs by providing
shade. Trees can also reduce
winter energy costs by interfering
with wind patterns that
cause heat loss by air fi ltration
in homes with inadequate insulation.
The
Greening the Gateway
Cities program staff estimate
that a 1 percent increase in
the tree canopy, above a minimum
10 percent canopy, reduces
the energy need for
cooling by nearly two percent
while energy needed for heating
is cut by just over 1 percent.
So far, the Greening the
Gateway Cities program has
planted roughly 19,000 trees,
mostly in the front and side
yards of private homes.

Malden resident presents
fi rst-ever photo of a black hole
By Barbara Taormina
eople around the world
were awestruck this week
when scientists released the
first image of a mysterious
and terrifying point in the universe,
a supermassive black
hole 55 million light years from
Earth.
In Malden the extraordinary
accomplishment, which many
say will alter the course of astrophysics
and shape our future
understanding of the universe,
hit a little closer to home.
Sheperd Doeleman, one of the
lead scientists on the project
that involved a team of 200 researchers
spread around the
globe, is a neighbor who lives
on Sprague Street.
“We are delighted to be able
to report to you today that we
have seen what we thought
was unseeable. We have seen
and taken a picture of a black
hole,†said Doeleman Wednesday
morning during a press
conference at the National Science
Foundation in Washington,
D.C.
A senior research fellow
at the Harvard-Smithsonian
Center for Astrophysics, Doeleman
is also the director of
Image of a black hole captured by the EHT collaboration.
(Courtesy Photo)
the Event Horizon Telescope
(EHT) collaboration, a worldwide
network of eight radio
telescopes that together managed
to capture the image of
a black hole in the constellation
of Virgo.
As Albert Einstein and any
sci-fi fan can tell you, a black
hole is created when a huge
amount of matter is compressed
into a very small space.
The result is a gravitational
force so powerful that not
even tiny specs of light can
escape being pulled on a terrifying
ride into oblivion. With
a mass estimated to be four
times that of the sun, black
holes are said to have the power
to stretch and warp spacetime.
During
the press conference
Doeleman explained that the
bright sections of the lower
part of the orange ring surrounding
the black circle is
matter moving at light speeds,
which lines up with the research
team’s predictions that
were based on Einstein’s theories.
“We now know clearly that
black holes drive large-scale
structure in the universe,†said
Doeleman.
“As with all great discoveries,
this is just the beginning,â€
he added.

have a story that I want
to share with you all. It is
a true story.
For the last few weeks,
I was sure that I had diabetes.
I was positive that
I had all the symptoms
of this illness. Fortunately,
I had an appointment
with my doctor. I was going
to tell him my story
about my ailments. When
it was my turn to see him
in his offi ce, he immediately
asked me how I was,
and I was ready to tell him my
story. I said to him, “Now, Doctor,
this is Doctor Ruane speakingâ€
– ME! I told him of my diagnosis
of diabetes. He asked me
immediately, “What makes you
thing you have diabetes?
Well, I have tingling in my
I
feet, and this is very important,
all my life I dieted, never having
desserts except on weekends.
Now in my new humble abode,
I have delicious desserts twice
a day, and it is catching up with
me. And no, I have not put on
any weight, which amazes me. I
am eating all these goodies and
everything seems to stay the
same. So something is wrong.
To add to the story, while dining
in the dining room, I overheard
a conversation: “Can you
imagine this; my doctor told
me that I have diabetes. I’m 85
years old and now I have diabetes.
I never heard of such a
thing. I can’t believe I have diabetes
at my age.â€

back into the room he informed
me, YOU DO NOT HAVE DIABETES!
This was music to my ears.
I thanked the doctor over and
over again. Never again will I try
to diagnose my ailments. Let
this be a good lesson for me.
I was so happy leaving his offi

I deserved it!

~ Letter to the Editor ~
The real costs of artifi cial turf on Roosevelt Park
Dear Editor,
In the last few weeks, the Salemwood
School community
and Malden residents learned
there is a plan to artifi cial turf
the Roosevelt Field to meet
the needs of the many athletic
teams in the City.
At face value this may seem
like a great idea considering
the condition of the fi eld. The
field has not been renovated
since the school was built
nearly 20 years ago in 1999.
There is no doubt the field
certainly needs renovations
which includes an improved
drainage system to alleviate
muddy conditions.
But it is not that easy, artificial
turf removes another
large natural green space in
our community forever. Artifi -
cial turf adds to global warming
through increasing ground
surface temperatures by as
much as 40 degrees. By removing
grass, we are also removing
a natural pollution fi lter, a natural
heat absorber and cooling
system in the summer, and
a resource for adding oxygen
into the air.
The cost of using crumb rubber
infi ll in the turf is a more
serious issue. Crumb rubber is
an unregulated product that is
now being investigated as part
of extensive research studies
by the EPA, Consumer Product
Safety Commission and the
California Office of Environmental
Health Hazard Assessment
(OEHHA). Crumb rubber
is made up of shredded and
ground up used tires that conGrand

tain a host of harmful substances
and known carcinogens
that could seriously
affect the health
of individuals playing on
these fi elds but more importantly,
in this case, the
children from the Salemwood
School who will be
playing on this product
for over 9 years of their life
as students at the Salemwood
School.
The cheapest option
at the time is not always the
cheapest option in the long
run. There are confl icting cost
savings data comparing natural
grass maintenance and the
cost of maintaining, replacing
and disposing of turf at the
end of its useful life.
The cost of this project is well

over $2 million. A large portion
of the taxpayer funded Community
Preservation Act monies
are being funneled into the
project.
The cost of not involving the
Salemwood School community
and the surrounding neighborhood
has divided residents
and caused a riff because the
planning of this project was
not transparent and inclusive
from the start.
The cost of not including the
planning of this project with
the Salemwood Community
is this: the 1200 low income
and predominantly (70 percent)
ELL students who attend
this school had no part in planning
the design of this project.
There is no plan for a basketball
court which is a priority
for the students. There is no
plan for an additional handicap
accessible playground for
the many multi handicap students
who attend the school.
There was no outreach as to
how this lengthy construction
project will aff ect the school
day for the students and staff .
As an educator at the Salemwood
School and a lifelong
resident of Malden, I cannot,
in good conscience vote
for anyone in political offi ce,
who approves this project
without stepping back and approaching
it from a more inclusive,
transparent and cautious
manner.
The Salemwood Community
and the surrounding neighborhood
should not have
been an afterthought. The Salemwood
School was built on
this park and the children who
attend this school should be
the fi rst priority. I, personally,
believe Malden can do a better
job as a community in this
instance.
Signed,
Kathleen M. Sullivan

Energy upgrades begin with light bulbs
By Barbara Taormina
ow many Honeywell workers
does it take to change
31,600 lightbulbs?
Although there are no quick
H
answers, the city does know
it cost $8.8 million to kick off
a multiyear contract for energy
effi ciency upgrades to city
buildings and facilities that
the City of Malden signed with
Honeywell last year.
Councillor-at-Large Debbie
DeMaria said School Superintendent
John Oteri gave
a great report on the Honeywell
project at a citywide PTA
meeting earlier this month. “So
far the project has replaced
31,600 lightbulbs, which are
now all LED,†said DeMaria.
“Honeywell is moving forward
with all its energy audits, and
they are working on thermostats.â€
The
new bulbs are the fi rst
major accomplishment of a
project that began back in February
2017, when the Metropolitan
Area Planning Council
(MAPC) chose Honeywell to
provide energy management
services based on requests for
quotes the planning council
issued on behalf of fi ve communities,
including Malden.

tor of public facilities, worked
with MAPC and served on a
three-member selection committee
that evaluated the Requests
for Quotation and decided
on Honeywell.
As part of the project, Honeywell
is conducting a comprehensive
energy audit on
all city buildings and facilities
such as parks. The company
will then move forward with
upgrades and improvements
to old and ineffi cient equipment,
which promises significant
savings in energy costs.
Among the improvements
Honeywell will assess are new
boilers, chillers, upgraded ventilation
systems, windows and
insulation. The company also
typically looks at technology
to control lighting and temperature
in buildings, systems
that control water consumption
and wastewater infrastructure,
and opportunities
to incorporate renewable energy
sources, such as biomass,
geothermal and solar alternatives.
Honeywell will also assess
ongoing operations and
maintenance.
City councillors felt a proactive
approach to maintaining
and upgrading city buildings
with energy-efficient
equipment and strategies is
a solid green investment that
would keep any emergency
repairs at bay. But what really
sold councillors and other
city offi cials on the project is
that Honeywell was agreeing
to an energy savings performance
contract.
Honeywell has guaranteed
that the city will see different
levels of savings on energy
costs as the project moves
forward. Over the next 14 to 16
years, the project is expected
to save Malden approximately
$11 million in energy costs.
If those savings fall short, Honeywell
has agreed to make up
the diff erence.

MHS Golden Tornadoes baseball kickoff
Face Lawrence High in fi rst road game of the season
By Jason Mazzilli
I
t will be a mix of veterans and
rookies for the Malden High
School baseball squad embarking
on a new season today
on the road at Lawrence
High School. While some experienced
players top the roster,
which is led by returning
Northeastern Conference
(NEC) All-Star pitcher Billy
Stickney, there will be plenty
of new faces this year when
the Golden Tornadoes open
today versus their non-league
opponent.
“Many of our starters were
seniors last season and we
have a lot of spots to fi ll this
year,†third-year Malden coach
Steve Freker said. “It will be a
challenge, but there has been
a lot of enthusiasm so far, and
our players are excited about
starting up the season.â€
In addition to Stickney, who
went 4-3 on the mound with a
sparkling 1.96 earned run average
last season, Malden is
also led by three other experienced
seniors, who will join
Stickney as captains: Christian
Monahan-Dasilva, Cameron
Oliveira and Ari Cohen. Monahan-Dasilva
will return as
the Golden Tornadoes’ shortstop
and will also see time on
the mound as a starting pitcher.
Oliveira is Malden’s top returning
outfi elder and will be
in center field. Cohen is the
starting catcher and will also
be a pitcher in both a starting
and relieving role.
“Christian [Monahan-Dasilva]
was a basketball All-Star,
and he’s our best athlete and
most experienced player, with
three years of varsity baseball,â€
er
coach Freker said. “Cameron
[Oliveira] has improved every
year, and we expect a lot from
him this year in a full-time role.
Ari [Cohen] stepped in and did
a great job on the mound for
us last year. This year we also
need him behind the plate
for us.â€
“We are going to really be
counting on those guys,†coach
Freker said. “Beyond those returning
seniors we really do
not have any varsity-experienced
players. Our other players
either played on the junior
varsity or freshman teams last
year, or are new to the school.â€
Coach Freker said there has
been a stronger emphasis on
teaching and the fundamentals
this year than in others due
to the overall inexperience.
“We had to go way back to the
basics for most of these players,
and the ones who do have
experience have really helped
prepare us as well with their
patience and attentiveness.â€
Malden will also be looking
for some pitching depth from
a pair of junior lefthanders:
Ezra Kruckenberg and Devin
Killoren. “Both of these players
will also be in the lineup
every day when they are not
on the mound,†coach Freker
said. “They are knowledgeable
baseball players and we need
them to step right in this year.â€
The Golden Tornadoes will
also be looking for contributions
from senior infi elder Danny
Fuentes, transfer from Marblehead;
junior infi elder Tom
Curran, sophomores Clifton
Noelsaint, Mike Mathes and
Kevin Nguyen; and freshmen
Shawn Bartholomew and Shai
Cohen.

of the 2019-2020 fall sports
season. The GBL is expected
to expand as more schools are
added.
“The NEC is one of the toughest

cut out for us,†coach Freker
said. “We are hoping to … get
back to the postseason tournament
this year.â€
The past two seasons Malden

M
alden native and NFL Super
Bowl Champion Breno
Giacomini will return to
his hometown on Saturday,
May 11 for his annual American
Football Without Barriers
(AFWB) camp. He will be
joined by former NFL Cleveland
Browns tight end Gary
Barnidge at Macdonald Stadium
on Pearl Street. The free
camp is open to residents in
neighboring communities and
will hold sessions for youngsters
in grades K-6 from 5-6:30
p.m. and in grades 7-12 from
7-9 p.m. Campers will be put
through a variety of drills in an
eff ort to improve their skills.
Breno and his good friend
Gary Barnidge founded AFWB,
a football-related charity foundation
in 2011. The foundation’s
goal is to spread the
game of football to underprivileged
areas around the world
by hosting yearly camps that
support football clubs in other
countries, as well as spending
time to help out American
local charities. Breno’s strong
connection to his hometown
along with his passion to give
back to his community led
him to off ering the program
to Malden officials several
years ago.
Registration will be on May
11 at 4 p.m. at Macdonald Stadium.
Participants may also
register on line at www.afwbcamp.com.

from the Friends of the Malden
River, the City of Everett,
and the Mystic River Watershed
Association (MyRWA)
secured funding and project
partners to complete an independent
and comprehensive
health risk assessment for the
river. The results show health
risks for cancer are negligible
over a lifetime of recreational
boating on the Malden
River.
“In the absence of a rigorous
health risk analysis, ‘stay
away from the water’ has
been the logical and appropriate
precautionary advice
given to the public in prior
years. This report represents
a breakthrough for the recreational
use of the river,†said
Kathy Vandiver of the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology’s
Center for Environmental
Health Sciences (MIT CEHS), a
volunteer at the Friends of the
Malden River.
Overview of the work
T
his health risk study was
completed by Gradient
Corporation, MIT CEHS and
the MyRWA. For the purposes
of this study, sediment
samples from the Malden River
were collected during the
summer of 2017 and analyzed
for contaminants in certifi ed
laboratories. The sediment
samples were collected from
nine locations: seven from potential
public boat launch locations
and two from existing
boathouse launches. These
were the Malden High School
and Tufts University sites. Water
samples were also collected
from multiple locations
along the river.
Health risk methods
ith the concentrations of
contaminants at these
locations in hand, analysts
calculated the health risks
faced by boaters who might
come in contact with the
water and sediments. To do
this, the analysts considered
a wide range of boaters, children,
casual paddlers, and frequent
competitive boaters.
Importantly, they assumed
that all boaters would frequently
be exposed to maximal
amounts of sediment
and water. For example, the
analysts assumed that boaters
would capsize every time
they went out; they would
wade through sediments up
to their knees every time they
launched; and they would
swallow water and sediments
on every trip as well. This kind
of risk study is called a “conservativeâ€
study, because it
incorporates maximal risk
factors into the calculations,
thus generating a wide margin
of safety.

Lime switches to e-bikes
By Barbara Taormina
L
ate last year, Scott Mullen
of Lime Bikes visited the
City Council to tout the bikesharing
program’s popularity,
its potential to ease traffi c on
congested city roads and its
contributions to public health
and the environment. Mullen
told City Councillors that
Lime is a new business that
continually reviewed operations
to meet the needs and
interests of the communities
the company serves. As part of
that ongoing review, Lime has
now announced it is calling in
all its traditional pedal-powered
bikes and replacing them
with e-bikes that are equipped
with a small electric motor that
gives riders a boost.
Last December, Mullen told
councillors that e-bikes are
popular with riders for a variety
of reasons, and the motorized
bikes are expected to
eventually make up 50 percent
of Lime’s fl eet.
“It helps someone who is
in a suit that doesn’t want to
ride because they may get
sweaty on the way to the train
or the offi ce,†he said. Mullen
also described the benefi ts of
e-bikes for seniors, especially
those who want to ride and
keep up with grandchildren as
they travel along the Northern
Strand Community Trail aka
Bike to the Sea.
That’s a small problem. As
Ward 5 Councillor Barbara
LEGAL NOTICE
Murphy pointed out, the city
ordinance that the council
crafted several years ago to
regulate the bike path bans
motorized vehicles. “One of the
conditions of the ordinance is
that [bikes] always need to [go]
under manual power,†Murphy
told Mullen. “There can’t be
any electronic or motorized
vehicle used on the bike path.â€
“I’d love to see the ordinance,â€
said Mullen, who added that
there are diff erent classes of
e-bikes. Lime’s e-bikes are the
lowest level of motorized bicycles,
and they require continual
peddling.
Both Murphy and Mullen
seemed sure the confl ict
could be resolved. But Murphy
stressed that councillors need
to review e-bikes and the ordinance.
Now
there will be more for
everyone to chew on during
that review. To begin with,
there will be a price bump.
E-bikes will cost $1 to unlock
and 15 cents for every minute
of the ride. Traditional Lime
bikes cost riders $1 for 30 minutes.
Lime
is also working toward
launching a fl eet of e-scooters.
This month, Brookline began
an eight-month pilot program
allowing 200 e-scooter rentals,
100 scooters from Lime, and
100 from Bird, a competing
e-scooter company.
Local media outlets were invited
to the inaugural e-scooter
ride that took off from

Brookline Town Hall around 9
a.m. on April 1. But according
to Callum Borchers, who covered
the ride for WBUR, several
minutes later, Kim Smith, 62,
was in an ambulance en route
to the hospital with a bloodied
head. Smith lost her balance
while riding a Lime e-scooter.
She received four stitches and
was released.
After the ride, Borchers interviewed
Mullen, who said he
wants to learn more about the
circumstances of the accident.
“I need more details,†Mullen
told the reporter. “Was she hit
by something? Was there a banana
peel? We’ll fi gure it out.
Let me get the facts, and we’ll
fi gure it out.â€
Malden was also a Lime pilot
program for the Metropolitan
Area Planning Council,
which developed a plan to
bring dock-less bike-sharing
programs to 15 greater Boston
communities. And by nearly all
accounts, it was a success.
When Mullen met with the
council, he brought some impressive
statistics. Lime bikes
debuted in Malden in late October
2017. Over the course of
14 months, the bikes were taken
on 80,000 rides, racking up
a total of about 70,000 miles.
Councillors did raise some
concerns about bikes being
left in the middle of sidewalks
and other spots that have
caused headaches for residents.
Although Mullen said
he was sorry to hear about

abandoned bikes, he
insisted the perception
was worse than
the problem.
Other councillors
noted that the program
wasn’t costing
the city anything, and
several praised Lime
bikes. They were especially
pleased that
Lime has located its
regional warehouse
on Eastern Avenue
and the company has
generated more than
two dozen new jobs,
several of which have gone to
Malden residents.

Results favorable for boating
ven
while assuming maximal
exposures, all boaters’
health risks met all state and
federal standards for acceptable
environmental health
risks. The highest health risk
over a lifetime of exposure to
Malden River water and sediments
in this study was calculated
to be about 1 in 10 -5
(one chance in 100,000). This
worst-case scenario falls well
below a level set by the Environmental
Protection Agency
(EPA) that would usually require
the cleanup of contaminated
site (1 in 10 -4, or 1 in
10,000).
Furthermore, boaters will
E
probably not ever experience
the worst-case risk level because
they will not be wading through
the sediments or capsizing on
every outing. Launching from a
dock – which is how boaters will
likely use the water – will reduce
the real risks even further.

created a meticulous, independent,

Trikes for Grown-Ups
Dear Savvy Senior,
What can you tell me about
three-wheeled bicycles? I’m
65 years old and would like
to start cycling again but I
have some occasional balance
problems and don’t trust myself
on a two-wheeler. What
can you recommend?
Ready to Ride
Dear Ready,
Three-wheeled bikes – also
known as adult trikes – are a
great cycling option for older
adults, especially those who
have concerns with their balance
or stamina. Here’s what
you should know, along with
some tips to help you shop
for one.
Safer Cycling
If you’d like to take up, or
continue bike riding, but worry
about falling, adult trikes are
a smart option to consider because
of the stability they provide.
With a trike, you can ride
as slow as you want without
ever losing your balance and
you can put both feet on the
ground while seated, which is
very reassuring for many older
riders.
In addition, adult trikes
are also made with a low
“step through†design making
mounting and dismounting
easier; they typically come
with big tires that ensure a
smooth ride; have ergonomic
handlebars that are easy to
reach and grip; and off er oversize
seats (some even have
backrests) for comfort and
support. And, other than the
frame, tricycles use the same
standard components as traditional
bikes do, so replacement
parts are readily available,
and repairs are not an issue.

The service doesn’t end with the sale!
ent types of adult trikes to
choose from with prices ranging
anywhere from a few hundred
to several thousand dollars.
To help you figure out
the right kind of trike that
meets your needs and budget,
here’s a breakdown of the different
styles and costs, along
with some popular models to
check out.
Upright Trikes
If you’re primarily interested
in a leisurely ride around
the neighborhood for pleasure,
fitness or running errands,
upright trikes are a
good choice. These are traditional
upright-positioned tricycles
that come with rear cargo
baskets and limited gear
options, usually ranging from
one to three-speeds.
A great choice in this category
is the Sun Traditional
Trike (see Sun.bike/trikes) that
cost between $440 and $550.
Or, for a less expensive option
consider the Schwinn Meridian
Adult Tricycle sold at Walmart,
Target or Amazon.com
for around $300.
Recumbent Trikes
These are the low-to-theground,
stretched-out frame
trikes that allow you to recline
with your legs positioned in
front of you. Available in various
styles, recumbent trikes
are very comfy, easy on the
back and aerodynamic which
make them ideal for longer
rides.
TerraTrikes (Terratrike.com)
and Catrike (Catrike.com) are
two of the biggest U.S. companies
that make tadpole-style
(the two wheels are in front)
recumbent trikes. Or, see Sun
Seeker (Sunseeker.bike), which
sells several Delta recumbent
trikes (two wheels in back) that
off er a higher seat level. But be
aware that recumbent trikes
are much more expensive, typically
ranging between $1,000
and $4,000.
E-Trikes
If you want a boost from
time-to-time, electric trikes are
a great option too. These trikes
are hybrids that have pedals
and a battery powered electric
motor, so you can exercise
when you want, or when
you need a boost, you can let
the motor assist you. A great
place to fi nd these is at ElectricTrike.com,
which off er a variety
of options ranging from
$1,500 to $3,000. You can also
fi nd them on e-bike sites like
PedegoElectricBikes.com, ProdecoTech.com
and Evelo.com.
Folding Trikes
If you like to travel or if you
have limited storage space,
trikes that are designed to fold
up to fi t in tight spaces are another
option. The Kent Adult
Westport Folding Tricycle and
Mantis Tri-Rad Folding Adult
Tricycle sold at Amazon.com
for around $300 are two popular
options to check out.

YOUR LEGISLATORS: This week,
Beacon Hill Roll Call looks at the
ratings senators and representatives
received from three interest
groups who measured legislators’
support or opposition
to the group’s legislative agenda
in the 2017 and/or 2018 session.
This week’s report features the
grades received from The Massachusetts
Public Interest Group,
the Planned Parenthood Advocacy
Fund and Citizens for Limited
Taxation.
CITIZENS FOR LIMITED TAXATION
(CLT)
CLT, founded in 1974, describes
itself as the group that
“defended state taxpayers
against a proposed state graduated
income tax, which it defeated
on the 1976 statewide ballot,
and again in 1994. CLT also limited
property and auto excise taxes
with Proposition 21/2 in 1980,
repealed the surtax and created
a state tax cap in 1986 and
rolled back the "temporary" income
tax hike on the 2000 ballot.
For decades CLT has provided
its annual ‘Rating of Legislators’
to provide taxpayers with
easy access to the performance
of their respective state representative
and senator regarding
tax policy.â€
"For 45 years CLT has been the
bulwark for taxpayers against
unlimited taxation in a state
that has an insatiable spending
problem," said Chip Ford, executive
director. "Since its founding,
CLT has saved Massachusetts
taxpayers billions of their
hard-earned dollars."
Key to scorecard: CLT used
ten House votes and fi ve Senate
votes when calculating the 2017
ratings of the state’s legislators.
Issues include the legislative pay
hike, reducing the sales tax and
income tax to 5 percent, imposing
a graduated income tax, increasing
the senior property tax
deduction to $2,000 and requiring
a social security number in
order to get public housing.

local representatives and senators
voted with CLT:

MASSACHUSETTS PUBLIC
INTEREST RESEARCH GROUP
(MASSPIRG)
MASSPIRG, founded in 1972,
describes itself as a consumer
group that “stands up to powerful
interests whenever they
threaten our health and safety,
our fi nancial security or our
right to fully participate in our
democratic society. Since 1972,
we’ve stood up for consumers,
countering the infl uence of big
banks, insurers, chemical manufacturers
and other powerful
special interests.â€
“In our role as watchdog and
advocate for the public interest,
we monitor the voting records of
Massachusetts’ state lawmakers
each legislative session,†said Executive
Director Janet Domenitz.
"We appreciate the hard work of
the entire Legislature, and particularly
those that scored 100
percent."
“While a number of our legislative

residents.
Ally: A legislator who consistently
supports the fund’s legislative
and policy agenda including
protecting access to safe, legal
abortion.
Mixed: A legislator who may
oppose access to safe, legal
abortion - but who supports preventive
health measures – such
as family planning and sex education
– and is willing to work
with the Advocacy Fund in support
of these issues. In other instances,
a “mixed†legislator may
