December 4, 2020
Dear SBDC Clients, Friends and Supporters:
This year has been full of big challenges. The effects of COVID-19 were felt by everyone including small
business, but, the New Jersey Small Business Development Centers small business clients sought our comprehensive
assistance to pivot their business operations and apply for Economic Injury Disaster Loan assistance, the
Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), and other forms of financing as well as grants. The volume of small businesses
coming to NJSBDC for assistance was astounding. But, our experts guided small business owners and clients
concerning the many issues confronting their business operations.
Americas SBDC New Jersey wants to officially congratulate our 2020 client success award winners who
have succeeded in weathering this economic storm, maintaining their business positions and at the same time navigating
towards economic recovery with the assistance and support of NJSBDCs business advisors and consultants.
As
we conclude this year, we think about the future in 2021. With the business experts of the NJSBDC
network, we expect to continue to support our clients paths to success and future resilience despite COVID-19
challenges.
Whether its international trade, e-business, technology commercialization, procurement opportunities,
sustainability or the regular ABCs of business planning, accounting, cash flow analysis, strategic pricing, marketing
strategies, sales, and more, AMERICAS SBDC NEW JERSEY is here to support small business owners and
entrepreneurs in all 21 counties.
We thank our federal funding partner, the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), our state funding
partner – the New Jersey Business Action Center (NJBAC) and the New Jersey Legislature, the host of our network-wide
program and our Headquarters, Rutgers Business School, and the additional higher education hosts of
regional SBDC offices statewide. We extend special gratitude to Bank of America, a major grant sponsor, and our
longstanding private sector financial sponsors of our annual Small Business Growth Awards event, PSE&G and
PNC Bank. While this year s December affair had to be canceled due to COVID-19, we look forward to regaining
normalcy next year so we can hold our annual event to officially recognize our 2020 Success Client Award
Winners.
statewide!
Since
We look forward to 2021 and all the opportunities we hope to provide our small business clients
Once again, we congratulate our 2020 client success award winners for their accomplishments in
weathering these great challenges and pivoting for recovery and future resiliency.

|12| 2020 SMALL BUSINESS SUCCESS AWARDS — NJSBDC
December 4, 2020
Dear Clients, Friends, and Supporters:
Congratulations to the NJSBDC networks 2020 client success award winners. Due to their
perseverance, passion, and the support provided by the networks business advisors and consultants,
they succeeded in confronting the challenges of the pandemic to survive and pivot.
The Legislature took the lead again this year in supporting restored state funding for NJSBDC
when it introduced and passed its budget. Thanks to the Legislature and Murphy Administration,
NJSBDCs state funding investment is back to where it was in prior years.
Long-time legislative advocates of the New Jersey Small Business Development Centers program,
the chairs and vice-chairs of the Assembly and Senate Budget Committees (Senator Paul Sarlo
and Assemblywoman Eliana Pintor Marin), with additional members support provided the added
needed resources for the NJSBDC network and the thousands of small business owners who receive
personalized one-on-one counseling, training, and other forms of technical assistance from
NJSBDCs expert business advisors. They sent a resounding message, recognizing NJSBDCs impact
on small business recovery, health, stability and resiliency.
The state investment is a key component towards SBDCs dollar-for-dollar federal match requirement.
The national network, Americas SBDC, receives strong support each year through congressional
appropriations for this jobs producing, business creation program. At a time when small
business owners are grasping for air, needing more guidance and assistance than ever before due to
the pandemic, this additional state funding helps maximize resources for small business assistance
services.
During very long days working remotely since the inception of this pandemic, our networks
experts did everything they could to assist small business owners in 21 counties, ensuring their
dreams and hopes didnt die. Network business advisors continue to assist small business clients now
in economic recovery stages.
As the challenges of this pandemic took its toll, the sea of humanity took hold. We felt small
business owners and entrepreneurs pain. Our experts worked with them arduously to ensure maintenance
and survival. Now, were looking to build small business recovery and resiliency.
Our 2020 Client Success Award Winners have successfully pivoted with NJSBDCs assistance
to ensure that they continue to make headway in these challenging times.
Sincerely,
Deborah K. Smarth
Chief Operating Officer & Associate State Director

in the early stages of re-opening, the patron level when it first re-opened was lower than normal times
due to parents health and safety concerns for their children.
The business continues to work with the Center in order to advance its business objectives as the
external environment changes. Most of the children enrolled in the day care center have parents who
are essential workers. Due to the influx of finance assistance, the business owner was able to pay rent
and insurance with the initial $10,000.
Since the receipt of initial SBA funds, the business received additional financing through the
Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) in the amount of $45,000.
Bejsiuk acknowledges that it was difficult having employees who were receiving unemployment
benefits to return to work, especially as a result of the $600 per week bonus. Despite that scenario, the
employees did return to work.
While the business experienced lower patron levels during the summer months, the business owner
has received calls for subsequent bookings. The PPP funds received covered most of the business payroll
and bills. With this foundation, initial and ongoing support by the NJSBDC, Carousel Learning,
Inc., continues to receive further guidance, assistance and support from the NJSBDC at RutgersCamden
in weathering the pandemic and its fallout effects on the economy and consumer behavior.
The Center has worked with Bejsiuk to help the business client understand the repayment options
on SBA disaster loans. Bejsiuk said that she likes to keep Palumbo and the NJSBDC in her circle of
resources due to their initial and continued assistance. As a client of the regional NJSBDC, Center
business advisors will provide further assistance concerning business re-opening stages and other guidance
as the COVID-19 environment changes.
I cant say enough about the support and professionalism of Robert Palumbo at the SBDC. The
organization truly works for your success, said Debbie Bejsiuk. I have worked with the SBDC for 21
years starting up my business in the childcare field and have relied on them throughout the years.
When calling the SBDC I knew I would receive exceptional help with quality service and support

Charlie and Tommy Senatore are brothers, but if you ask them, they would tell you they are
much more than siblings. They would say that they are a product of a love story, filled with entrepreneurial
spirit and passion for hard work. Their story begins with their mother, Antoinette, who was
born in 1921. She emigrated from Calabria, Italy, to Jersey City, where she found a job working as a
seamstress. She met her husband, Joseph Senatore, who was born in Jersey City. He owned a grocery
store selling fruit, vegetables and meat. The Senatore brothers at an early age worked at the family
store and also started a side hustle selling wooden clothes poles. They traveled to South Jersey to buy
the poles, shape the raw timber, and install them in homes throughout the Hudson County area.
After their parents retired, Charlie helmed the family business and continued operations. Both
brothers earned accounting degrees from then Saint Peters College, with Charlie receiving an additional
degree in economics. In 1986, they closed the family grocery store and looked forward to new ventures.
Two years later, the brothers purchased their first gas station on Garfield Avenue which today
operates as T and C Investments, LLC. The brothers worked long hours seven days a week. Ten years
later, they opened a second business location in Hoboken. In 2001, they built a hand car wash, creating
jobs. The Senatore brothers have operated under various franchises such as Amoco, Exxon and currently
Valero service stations.
Charlie and Tommy established another business, Liberty Aggregate, LLC, making aggregate for
construction by crushing and processing excavated virgin rock. Their aggregate supplies development
sites throughout Jersey City for both governmental and commercial use. In 2015, the brothers acquired
property to engage in multi-unit residential development in Jersey City.
During Hurricane Sandy, their gas station was chosen as the supplier of gasoline for municipal police,
fire and rescue vehicles in Jersey City, becoming a resource to help the community. The COVID19
pandemic caused a significant business slowdown for obvious reasons.
Prior to the pandemic, the business owners sought advice from NJSBDC at New Jersey City University
(NJCU). With NJSBDCs assistance, they began planning business revitalization. The regional
SBDC assisted them with loan and document evaluation services and choosing a qualified lender
with the most favorable terms. Even as the loan process slowed during the pandemic, they were able to
successfully obtain a $1.5 million refinance loan from SB One Bank. This enabled them to retire old
high interest debt, thereby stabilizing their business for future growth. The loan refinance resulted in a
total capital infusion of $4,528,076.
With the guidance from the NJSBDC at NJCU, the business applied for and received $10,000 from
the SBA EIDL Advance; $63,105 from the SBA Paycheck Protection Program (PPP); and $20,000
from the JCEDC CARES Grant Small Business Awards. These leveraged funds helped the business to
retain ten gas station employees and eight at their stone crushing facilities.
They are grateful to the NJSBDC at NJCU, their parents, family, friends, and customers and share
their success by anonymously supporting local civic and charity organizations to give back to the community.

DeBoers Auto, located in Hamburg, NJ, has been a client of NJSBDC of Northwest Jersey
since 2018. Since then, the business has maintained steady sales volumes and revenues while making
very substantial strategic changes in its business operations.
DeBoers Auto currently employs a staff of six and three of these team members are women. With
the assistance of SBDC, the business has decreased debt and has enhanced inbound marketing concerning
its services. Recently, DeBoers Auto implemented an apprenticeship program, responding to the
increased shortage of automotive technicians. During COVID-19 challenges, the business owner continues
to service the community with innovative programs while ensuring customer and staff safety.
Due to the resourceful and invaluable support of NJSBDC of Northwest Jersey and Assistant Regional
Director Mary Adelman, the business has made strategic pivots in its operations, particularly from a
financial management perspective. During this pandemic, Bill DeBoer notes that he has relied on
SBDCs assistance to navigate through these extremely challenging times. Bill even directs many of his
fellow small business owners to the NJSBDC for guidance and support.
The companys presence is very well known in the northern Sussex County area. The DeBoer familys
love of cars pre-dates the DeBoers Auto that proudly serves the Sussex County community today.
The business was founded by Bills father, Bill Sr., who always had a fascination with cars. After being
located in Newton, NJ, when it first started, the business moved to Hamburg, NJ, in 1985. Bill joined
his father in the business in 1997, after his life-long passion for computers and technology evolved into
an interest in automotive technology while he was at college. With a Certificate in Automotive Technology
and a B.S. in Management, Bill was able to specialize in automotive technology, which has differentiated
this business over the years. And, the business owner ensures that the knowledge of staff
keeps pace with technological changes in the industry.
DeBoers Auto emphasizes exceptional customer service including on-line booking, off-hour vehicle
drop-offs, loaner cars and valet pick-ups/drop-offs. All these service features live up to the mantra
of the business, We help people live life uninterrupted. Bills natural inclination for technology has
also enabled him to successfully leverage social media platforms in positive ways for his clientele.
As a champion for expanded knowledge and continual learning, Bill also participates in various
programs as an alumnus of Penn State University, including the mentoring and internship programs
offered through the universitys business school.

Taking over a restaurant, remodeling, rebranding and launching it is an arduous task. Its something
that small business owner Pallavi Bandi acknowledges was the hardest thing we have done in our
lives, but also something we will do over and over again
With the help of her dad, she and her husband opened up Amaravati Indian Cuisine in Hamilton,
NJ, showcasing traditional flavors. While pursuing Amaravati, Bandi felt there needed to be a place
where traditional flavors meet the modern day. So, IndiGrill was launched. After working hard on establishing
IndiGrill for more than two years, in August of 2019, the opening of IndiGrill officially occurred!
The culinary experience at IndiGrill is a perfect blend of traditional recipes served in a new
way. It took a lot of ingenuity and persistence to develop the diverse recipes for the offered menus.
Each sauce has its own character and personality and Pallavi Bandi acquiesces that it feels amazing to
see people enjoying them.
We would like to start off by thanking SBDC for always being there, said small business owner
Pallavi Bandi. We will be ever grateful for the guidance they provided during COVID-19.
Bandi joined other women business owners at The Women CEO Mentoring Forums, which also
helped her immensely, learning from the shared experiences of all the amazing and successful women
participating. Pallavi states that her husbands unconditional support helped her chart the course for her
business dreams. Her mom and three children encouraged her while she worked hard to turn IndiGrill
into a reality. Her kids say the restaurant has the best food!
Her love for food started in her grandmothers kitchen, which was simply an open area in her backyard.
Bandi has fond memories of the past family experience. Back then, my grandparents lived in a
house made with soil and the roof was made with leaves. I have not seen a home as abundant and as
warm as that cozy hut. My grandmother and my aunts sitting around a small wood burning clay stove
prepping, talking and cooking are some of the best meals of my life. I remember as a seven or eightyear-old,
bringing wood to light up fire in the evenings in my grandmothers kitchen. The smell of that
smoke still lingers around my nose. My aunts would gather around in the evenings and prep for the
next days meal. The conversations, the laughter and the voices still ring in my ears. It was amazing
how my grandmother would pick up a few herbs and vegetables from her backyard and turn into a
scrumptious meal. That was when I fell in love with food. Food was not just something we ate, it was
an emotion and brought all of us together. It is this love for food that helped me find my love for cooking
and eventually led me to opening my own restaurant. It is this love that pushed me to quit my corporate
career and become an entrepreneur
Judging from what has already been achieved, Pallavi Bandi is a restaurateur with high expectations!
NJSBDC at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) will continue to provide support and assistance
along the way.

NJSBDCs client, LBU, Inc., a Paterson-based manufacturing company that produces tote bags
with corporate logos, has been assisted by the NJSBDC at William Paterson University (WPU) on a
variety of business operational matters.
Most recently, the company heeded the calls of federal and state officials during the initial outbreak
of COVID-19 in March 2020. The company swiftly retrofitted its factory and began producing cloth
face masks and gowns, which were in short supply for healthcare workers fighting the pandemic.
As a client of the Center at William Paterson University (WPU), NJSBDC couldnt be any prouder
that in a time of need and crisis when one of our networks clients was able to deliver personal protective
equipment in New Jersey. As cited in a newspaper article, the company was able to repurpose
quickly,î‚´ the business did not have to lay-off employees, and the protective gear assisted hospitals,
nursing homes and other medical workers in need.
While the woven masks wont replace the high demand N95 masks, the product is still useful for
local nursing homes, doctors offices and support staff in hospitals The company is located in Paterson,
NJ, which has the nickname of Silk City due to its past tradition of textile mills and dye houses
that are almost all gone. But, this firm has made its mark on history.
LBU, Inc., President and Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey Mayer acknowledged the suppor t
received from Deborah Hoffman, Director of Passaic County Economic Development and NJSBDC
WPU Regional Director, Kate Muldoon. The SBDC was there for us in early March when all the shutdowns
were taking place and we had just started making PPE items, masks, medical gowns and medical
headwear when we were almost shut down
The SBDC has been an extremely valuable resource for us in so many ways. Your team has helped
us with great training, employment support, tax incentives, and terrific personal attention by always
being there for us, in person and always being available when we need supportî€î‚´ said Mayer.
Acknowledging the Regional Center Director, Kate Muldoon, Mayer stated that, This wouldve

In 2018, Mamas Southern Style BBQ 2, LLC, was recognized by the NJSBDC network as a

SBAs New Jersey 2020 Small Business Person of the Year. It just keeps on getting better!
Finnick started operating Mamas many years ago when his uncle retired. A relentless entrepreneur,
Chris works around the clock. A client of NJSBDC at Kean University, Mamas Southern Style BBQ

Murphy! Staffed mostly by close friends and relatives, Mamas prepares all its food to order and
its certainly worth the wait.
The SBDC at Kean University has been working with Chris for several years. I really appreciate

and ultimately, the selection, funding (from RBAC) and the buildout of a new location several

After working on attracting new customers to his restaurant, Chris was soon hit with a new dilemma.
His potential sales exceeded his capacity. Chris worked with the SBDC to search for a larger location.
The result was a location only four blocks from the original restaurant. The new location provided
three times more seating capacity and increased output as well as a better working environment for his
employees and a nicer ambiance for his patrons.
Chris considers NJSBDC at Kean University as a welcoming place for business guidance. Dave
has been working with me for several years, providing counseling in all areas of my business, including
marketing, sales, finance, management and pricingî‚« and even helping get financed to build out
our new, larger location in Vauxhall. Without question, the SBDC has proved to be the most valuable
resource for me to solve business problems, direct my business, and grow it substantiallyî€î‚´ boasts
Chris.
The SBDC looks forward to providing Chris with additional business advisory services so he can
reach his dream of multiple restaurant locations. NJSBDC business advisors and Regional Center Director
David Margulies are just not sure if they can make the smile on his face any bigger! What we are
sure of is that if you want great comfort food with unique flavors cultivated and passed down through
multiple family generations, in the Essex/Union area of NJ, come to the place written up by The New
York Times and visited by the MunchMobile Mamas.

2020 Small Business Awardee
NJSBDC AT RAMAPO COLLEGE OF NEW JERSEY
One Call Contracting, LLC
Kenneth Rekuc
567 Willow Ave.
Saddle Brook, NJ 07663
201-587-0986
The NJSBDC at Ramapo College of New Jersey received a desperate call from an accountant
referring his small construction company patron to the SBDC for assistance. The construction business
grinded to a halt and with no incoming revenue it was difficult to meet payroll or support equipment
expense obligations that continued despite the COVID-19 stay-at-home order for non-essential businesses.
The Regional Director of the Ramapo Center Vincent Vicari facilitated a collaborative service
arrangement that the Ramapo SBDC created with Corporate Turnaround (a past NJSBDC client) to develop
and design proper financial restructuring. The Center assisted the client, One Call Contracting,
with funding opportunities. Ken Rekuc, the owner of the firm, was glad to receive an economic injury
disaster loan (EIDL) as well as funds from the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) that saved his business.
One Call Contracting is back in business, doing well and having survived the storm of COVID-19
effects. Additionally, the construction business client continues to rely upon the NJSBDC at Ramapo
for further business guidance.
A key aspect of being a business owner is accounting for unforeseen challenges along the way.
However, how could any small business owner possibly account for a global pandemic turning the
worlds economy upside down? When COVID hit the state of New Jersey, my business, One Call Contracting,
LLC, was in a crisis. I had nowhere to turn for help in navigating such a storm. I searched for
guidance. I needed to know what I should be doing. I needed to know how to keep my business alive
through this pandemic. Then, after asking around and calling all sorts of different places, I learned
about the New Jersey Small Business Development Center at Ramapo College,î‚´ said Ken Rekuc.
I was able to get in contact with Vincent Vicari, the Regional Director of the Small Business Development
Center. Much to my surprise, he responded to a call I made late one evening. He provided
me with resources and gave me that critical guidance I needed to navigate my business through its
problems. I felt as though he saw my problems as his ownî€î‚´ continued Rekuc.
With NJSBDCs help, I was able to receive PPP funding as well as an EIDL loan. These critical
funds allowed One Call Contracting, LLC to stay afloat in those darkest of daysî€î‚´ added Rekuc. Now,
as the state recovers, my business is doing better and getting busier. My business has survived. In fact,
my business has even grown thanks to the Small Business Development Center at Ramapo College. The
long-term benefit of Vincent Vicaris guidance is that my service area has now expanded and I am now
looking forward to growth instead of trying to cut
NJSBDC at Ramapo College of New Jersey looks forward to further assisting One Call Contracting,
LLC as Ken Rekuc navigates these challenging times.

2020 Small Business Awardee
NJSBDC AT RARITAN VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE
Organic Plant Care, LLC.
Bill Grundmann
P.O. Box 201
Frenchtown, NJ 08825
908-309-6611
https://organicplantcarellc.com
Bill Grundmann has worked in the tree care industry for nearly 35 years. He obtained his
Bachelors of Science degree in Forest Resource Management from the College of Environmental Science
and Forestry at the State University of New York in Syracuse. After graduating, he worked as a
consulting forester throughout the southeastern United States managing timberland for private and industrial
clients. In 1984 he moved to Hunterdon County, NJ, and began his career in arboriculture,
working for a private tree expert company for 25 years in management and as a sales representative.
Grundmann is a New Jersey Licensed Tree Expert and NJ Approved Forester.
During his successful career, Bill Grundmann implemented plant health care programs that focused
on soil testing and utilizing organic products to manage plant nutrition and insect and disease outbreaks.
He found the whole-system organic approach to plant management to be superior to conventional
programs that used synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. For years he tried to steer the company in
this new direction, but the ship wouldnt turn. So, he decided to start his own company, Organic Plant
Care, LLC, founded in the Spr ing of 2009.
In its first year of operation, Organic Plant Cares annual sales totaled $88,000 and staff consisted
of Grundmann and one other employee. Annual sales now exceed $1.1 million, with nine employees.
Bill contends that his business is successful because, We do excellent work. That is the secret to our
success. His greatest business challenge has been finding great employees. Not only has he been
able to achieve this goal, but many of his current employees have been with the company for the long
term. He believes the great strengths of his business are the quality of Organic Plant Cares employees
and the high level of customer service they bring to their jobs. The SBA Paycheck Protection Program
(PPP) funds he received in May allowed him, as an essential business in the midst of the pandemic, to
weather the storm of uncertainty and we were able to hold on to all our employees.î‚´
Since 2008 to the present, Grundmann has received guidance from the NJSBDC at Raritan Valley
Community Colleges Vicki Lynne Morgan for star t-up and marketing; Bill Harnden for QuickBooks,
business plan and financing; James Carty for legal; Michele Walten for QuickBooks and Rita
Auld for human resources. Bill Grundmann knew he had the confidence and scientific knowledge to
run his business, but he preferred to be out in the field doing the work, rather than in the office.
The assistance you (the SBDC) have given us is unbelievable, said Bill GrundmannI bet youve
helped a lot of people.î‚´ The NJSBDC at RVCC looks forward to continuing to assist Bill Grundmann
and our Center business advisors and staff wish him and Organic Plant Care a very successful future.

Physical Features Salon and Spa
Richard Anzivino

Woodbridge, NJ

Physical Features Salon and Spa has been in business since 1971. In the 49 years this salon
has been in business, Richard Anzivino, owner and founder, has remained dedicated to his profession
and to three major building blocks: Motivating a dedicated staff; expanding on-trend salon services;
and creating a casual and friendly environment for clients and staff.
Anzivino began hairdressing in 1948 in his mothers basement beauty salon in Woodbridge, NJ.
He started it with two employees. It has now become one of the most progressive salons in New Jersey
with 20 stylists and other beauty professionals.
He was the featured artist in two consecutive International Beauty Shows in New York City and his
work was published on the cover of The Guide Magazine. Richard has been on over thirty television
talk shows during the years including Johnny Carsons Tonight Show. Anzivino is also vocally talented
and performs throughout the New Jersey/New York area. Hairstylist by day and singer by night! With
such a history and legacy in place, he was determined to make sure that Physical Features Salon and
Spa survived and thrived. He diligently prepared himself to take part in the available CARES Act programs,
working many hours with the NJSBDC to access these opportunities to survive and revive his
salon. This helped retain the salons dedicated employees. He then invested in creating a safe environment
with systems and equipment at the salon that protected his returning clients.
The New Jersey Small Business Development Center at Rutgers-New Brunswick, headed by
Elayne McClaine, was notified by Phil Bujalski, chief REHS/deputy health director of the Woodbridge
Health Department, that after COVID-19 business re-opening inspections, they found Physical
Features Salon and Spa went above and beyond standards by installing its respective HVAC systems
with air purification/disinfection equipment par excellence. The system is an award winning purifier
designed so that every cubic inch of air is purified—killing 99% of viruses, bacteria and mold. The
Township Health Inspectors report acknowledged that the salon should be congratulated for its outstanding
efforts to promote the safest environment possible.
To comply with social distancing, the salon also ensured that each one of its stations is enclosed
and separated from fellow patrons, providing maximum safety and comfort for patrons and employees.
The salon also constantly sterilizes all exposed surfaces, maximizing protection. A post-COVID motto
of the salon emphasizes the safety of all staff members and patrons. An ultraviolet virus-killing treated
air sterilization system along with private cutting rooms is the ultimate social distancing format in the
salon.
NJSBDC commends Richard Anzivino and his team for tapping multi-faceted services and programs
to survive and excel in this period of crisis and business disruption.

NJSBDC Technology Commercialization Specialty Consultant Randy Harmon assisted
Sonica Imaging of Princeton University in applying for and winning a $200,000 National Science
Foundation (NSF) Partnerships for Innovation (PFI) grant award.
The grant will support the demonstration and prototyping of a new ultrasound-based MRI-quality
medical imaging device. The technology produces high-resolution, 3D tomographic images with quantitative
tissue properties. This technique can complement existing imaging tools, such as MRI and CTscans,
and replace them in some applications.
Potential benefits accruing from Sonica Imagings technology innovation include higher accuracy
cancer screening; improved patient experiences and outcomes by reducing unnecessary follow-up procedures
and misdiagnosis; and the provision of safer, non-ionizing, sedative free imaging.
NJSBDC Specialty Consultant Randy Harmon connected with the team through a seminar that he
was invited to give at the University by the Princeton Entrepreneurship Council in June 2019. The Sonica
Imaging Team had previously completed the full NSF I-Corps entrepreneur boot camp program.
NJSBDCs Technology Commercialization Specialty Program, through its Senior Consultant Harmon,
reviewed, critiqued and made suggestions for strengthening Sonicas draft grant proposal.
According to Gregory Davies of Sonica Imaging, Randys advice was integral in helping us to focus
and strengthen our grant proposal, in addition to providing useful insights in how to be successful
during the grant period
As time goes on, NJSBDC will continue to support and assist with Sonicas future growth needs.

Village Babies Development Center, LLC
Dana Kearney, Owner

Chief Executive Officer and Founder of Village Babies Development Center, LLC VBDCî€
Dana Kearney, has been tapping the services of NJSBDC at Rutgers-Newark since July 2013.
Located in South Orange, NJ, VBDC was established in March 2005, shortly after Kearneys son,
Jaelen, was born. By caring for her own son and subsequently two of her neighbors children, she nurtured
her idea of establishing an early childhood center.
These latter personal experiences along with Danas past registered nurse profession influenced the
formation of VBDC. Within four years, she expanded from a registered in-home daycare with five children
to a free-standing early childhood development center that provides up to 165 children with diverse
personal needs, social/emotional skills and customized education.
After meeting with NJSBDC at Rutgers-Newark Regional Center Director Dr. Tendai Ndoro at an
Introduction to Business Workshop, Kearney began incrementally developing her business goals and
vision. I am sincerely humbled and grateful for the guidance by Dr. Ndoro and the many other
NJSBDC consultants that have provided me with necessary tools to support my endeavors over the past
seven years,î‚´ stated Dana Kearney.
Kearney has diligently utilized resources of the NJSDBC at Rutgers-Newark, participating in several
training events and workshops and receiving technical assistance totaling more than 100 hours of
counseling (prep and contact) from the Center. Danas business owner sustainability skills were tested
during the initial COVID-mandated closing of childcare centers. Prior to the lockdown, VBDC had 47
employees. Despite the pandemic, she retained 17 employees, then, rehired them after re-opening the
VBDC facility. With NJSBDCs support, the business received an EIDL and PPP loan to compensate
for the business economic losses, helping VBDC to maintain and re-hire employees during the pandemic.
Dana used her medical knowledge to provide a protective environment at the facility to address
such COVID-19 challenges. My medical experience as a registered nurse and knowledge of early
childhood growth and development created a unique childcare service,î‚´ she observed.
With careful planning and client feedback, Kearney reopened VBDC on June 29 with more than 60
children. She created and offers Distance Learning Kits customized to each childs learning style for
those patrons who opted to keep their children at home, encouraging them to use Zoom so their children
can join with the other attending children for a live brief morning exercise.
VBDC is engaging with the Rutgers Business School/SBDC Student Experiential Learning program
concerning digital marketing/E-commerce aspects of the online Distance Learning Kits product.
VBDC will also collaborate with the RBS Student Consulting Supply Chain program, exploring production
viability of the Distance Learning Kits and sourcing manufacturing suppliers. The Center has
also referred Kearney to an Intellectual Property attorney who will be assisting her with patent/
trademarks for the Distance Learning Kits.
