LACDD NEWS
By Christine Wells, LA (LW) CDD Community Director
It is hard to believe half of the year is behind us. We hope
residents have enjoyed all of the activities that
occurred the first half of the year and just know the best is
yet to come! This month staff has worked hard to plan
what we think is the best Camp Lake Ashton to date. The
Cypress Gardens water ski show returns, in addition to
craft classes and lots of fun get togethers. All events and
supplies are FREE thanks to our wonderful sponsors! See
the back cover for more information.
Supervisors are busy planning the budget for the next
fiscal year and will meet on August 15 at 9:30 to finalize
the budget for that year. At the July 18 Board meeting
Supervisors received a Reserve Study analysis that
outlined the pathway to where we are now in addition to
the current inflation rate and other factors that have
changed over the past year. This is a very important tool
that Supervisors and staff use to plan for future repairs
and/or replacement of various property within the District.
Staff will be researching several items that make up this
reserve study so that a final version can be used to move
forward with future planning. Supervisors also reviewed
the budget and received an updated version of the Joint Amenity Facilities Policy that will be discussed in
depth at a Joint CDD Workshop that will be scheduled in August. More details will be released via email blast
when confirmed. Staff gave an update on the Restaurant Focus Group. They are working hard to evaluate the
results of the survey released on July 16 and will present a report of their recommendations of what to do
moving forward at the August BOS meeting. This group has done an excellent job coming up with a well
thought out plan of what they feel will be viable and supported by the majority of residents. Thank you to all
participants for their dedication of time.
Residents should now notice the addition of new ellipticals in the Fitness Center, a new projector in the
Cinema, and a new Activities Office! Supervisors work very hard to ensure they are keeping up with
equipment replacement and upgrades to the Clubhouse so residents always have a great experience when
visiting the amenities. The Activities Office is an exciting project that has been years in the making. Residents
will now have immediate access to Resident Services when they come through the main entrance to the
Clubhouse. The Club Office is located to the left where residents can book rooms for activities, buy an
entrance gate opener, and access clerical services. The Activities Office is on the right with walk-up openings
to volunteers and staff ready to help sell tickets, register guests, issue Resident ID cards, and much more.
Don't forget to thank the Activities Office volunteers when visiting; they are always willing to help everyone
with a smile on their face. They have been patient throughout the transition from the desk in the Ballroom, to
a not-so-short-term desk setup in the Foyer, and finally to their new space in the Activities Office. We
appreciate all they do and want to thank them for everything. Thank you to Mary Ax, David Harrison, Barbara
Harrison, Judy Morgan, Marcia Blasko, Cathy Boruschewitz, Valerie Fetcho, and Karen Nelson.

By Mary Bosman, LAIICDD Community Director
The summer heat of Florida is upon us, so there are many ways to enjoy your leisure time at the HFC
inside the air conditioning. Billiards, the pool, Corn Hole, Basketball, Racquetball, walking inside the
Community Center and Fitness Room, the Billiard-Pool Game, and the multitude of Wii Games are
all available. There’s also reading and puzzles to put together in the Media Center. Some of these
require setting up, so please call ahead Monday through Friday at 863-595-1562 to give staff time to
check for room availability and to get your equipment set up. Notification no less than 30 minutes
ahead of the time you wish to use the equipment will ensure you’ll be playing at the time you wish
to do so. Questions are always welcomed about the games by calling the above number. Check the
LA West Connection Newsletter for a thorough description of the games available.
The final phase of the LED lighting project changeout is nearing completion. The lights are brighter,
and costs are going down due to this yearlong effort. There are also other ways to save energy at
the HFC. When you are done with your event in any of the hallway rooms, please adjust the wall
thermostat back to the 74-75 degrees which is the standard. The Fitness Room, the Community
Center, the Sports Court, and the Racquetball Courts have programmed thermostats that are
enclosed in a clear case. If you are using one of those rooms and wish to have the temperature
adjusted, staff will need to be notified well in advance of your event. The Fitness Room will always
be kept at the recommended 70 degrees for
fitness training. Again, call the number listed
above to notify staff for the other rooms.
Staff is not here on weekends, so please call
Monday thru Friday from 8 AM until 4 PM.
Closing the ice machine door and turning off
the TV’s and lights when not in use will also
help to conserve energy usage. We all need
to be good stewards of energy consumption,
right?

The Snowy Egret is the small delicate
white Egret found at Lake Ashton. In breeding
plumage it takes on a sassy appearance with
frazzled-looking plumes about its head giving it
an angry demeanor. It is easily identified by the
small size, black bill, black legs and those
"golden slippers." In high breeding plumage
the usually yellow lores (area in front of the bill)
turn red and the feet orange. Found at any
body of water at Lake Ashton year round it will
often sit still at the edge of the water waiting
for an unsuspecting small fish to swim by.
Sometimes they forage actively in the shallow
water walking or running about. They will also
stir the bottom of the pond with their yellow
feet to scare up prey like fish, insects and
crustaceans into action. Like other birds in the
heron family, they nest in colonies usually mixed
in with other species.

LA ( LW) HOA CORNER
By Debby Landgrebe
Please welcome Steve Hogan to the HOA BOD as
he fills in for the remaining term (exp. February
‘24) of Ken Rickey. Ken, thank you for your
willingness to service Lake Ashton.
In this day and age time often seems to be running
away from us. Other times, it’s slower than
molasses! This also applies to organizations. While
it may seem that the HOA may not be moving
forward, I can assure you, behind the scenes we
are hard at work! Some of the projects we’ve been
working on include; CC&Rs restatement, age
verification updates, compliance issues, a
transition to a management company, transferring
banks, mailboxes, insurance updates, and the list
goes on. Here’s some updates:
• CC&Rs: We are getting closer to finalizing the
restatement document and are preparing
YouTube videos regarding this. We are closer to
providing the document to our members along
with proper voting data. PLEASE make sure we
have your most updated contact information,
mailing address/es, emails, and contact
numbers. We want you to be in the loop. This
information is important for voting proxies. We
are scheduling a Special Members Meeting,
including a CC&R phase 1 vote for November 13
at 2 pm in the Clubhouse Ballroom (mark your
calendar).
• Age verification: We are almost complete with
compiling and digitizing the most recent past
survey; just a few more items to validate. We do
meet the Federal Standards for senior housing.
IF you are a newer resident within the last 2-3
years OR we do not have a completed age
verification form for everyone in your residence,
contact the BOD to complete an age verification
form. All members including renters need to
adhere to the rules.
• Mailboxes: Most of our mailboxes are as old as
the community. A number of them are in need of
replacement. Since earlier this year an
outstanding group of residents have worked
tirelessly to put together replacement options
for new mailboxes. Thank you Bob Constantine,
Alan Cropp, Mary Dornhecker, David Fix, Debby
Landgrebe, Jackie Perez, Iris Realmuto, Linda
Rodd, John Sawyer and Harriett Wild! Your
dedication, honesty, and insight was invaluable.
Great work! Because of their input we are close
to having two vendors and a much better
mailbox and post option.
We need residents to help continue to keep Lake
Ashton the beautiful gem that it is. WE NEED
VOLUNTEERS! Currently needed are ARC reps,
and Board of Directors Candidates. Please contact
Directors for additional information.

will guide you through the process and help ensure
that your paperwork is complete, and that the ARC
review should go through smoothly. Go to
arc.lakeashtonhoa.org and type in your email
address. You will then be prompted to create a
new account. An email fr om

HOW GRASS CL IPPINGS
AFFECT PONDS
The majority of home owners use a lawn care
contractor to maintain their lawns. During the hot
summer months, contractors are in a hurry to beat
the heat and use less awareness when mowing
properties that border ponds. When grass
clippings are introduced to a pond, they increase
the nutrient levels making it more likely to cause
algae to bloom. Please remind lawn care
contractors to mow with the chute closed or in a
direction to where the clippings are not blown
into the pond. Contact Matt Fisher, Operations
Manager, at mfisher@lakeashtoncdd.com with any
questions regarding aquatic maintenance in any
ponds located in Lake Wales.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
By Fay Wood, NW Chief
Protect Your Vehicle - Or Risk Theft!
Lock It Up Always:
An unlocked vehicle is an invitation to thieves that they just can’t resist. Whether parked at a mall or in a
parking lot, thieves will go by vehicles “flipping” handles checking to see if any are unlocked. When they
find one they will grab anything they can get their hands on.
Clean It Up:
Keeping items in plain view inside your vehicle is another invitation to thieves. Purses, computers, GPS
units, phones, backpacks, even loose change is a temptation. If you must have items in your car, lock
them inside your trunk. The best way to protect your property is to take it with you or leave it at home.
Park in safe areas:
Thieves don’t like to be seen committing crimes. Highly visible and well-illuminated areas can help deter
thieves. But don’t think this is the time to let your guard down. Keeping your vehicle clear of items and
locked will be the best prevention.
CITIZENS ASSISTED PATROL (CAP)
By Mike Weissberg
Citizens Assisted Patrol (CAP) is always looking for more volunteers to patrol
the streets. Come help be the eyes, ears, and presence for the Sheriff’s
department. Patrols are once a week for two hours. Applications are
available in the Clubhouse and HFC. For more information contact Mike
Weissberg at 863-324-3541 (please leave a message).
DRIVER SAFETY REMINDERS
Polk County Schools start back August 10. Please use
caution when traveling CR 653 during school opening and
closing times.
All vehicles, including golf carts, must obey all stop
signs and the 20 mph speed limit throughout Lake
Ashton. Drivers, please keep an eye out for
pedestrians at all times. Obeying posted speed limit
and traffic signs can help avert a potential tragedy.
Adults should not place young children on their laps
between them and the steering wheel as this creates
a hazardous condition for the children in the case of a
panic stop or accidents.

WILDLIFE ALERT — WATCH FOR ALLIGATORS
Female alligators build a mound nest of soil, vegetation, or debris and deposit an
average of 32 to 46 eggs in late June or early July. Incubation requires approximately
63-68 days, and hatching occurs from mid-August through early September. Alligators
and crocodiles are an important part of Florida's heritage and play a valuable role in
the ecosystems where they live. Those who live near lakes and ponds should expect to
see alligators from time-to-time but they should never be fed or approached.
If you see an alligator:
• Always give these reptiles a respectful distance (at least 10 feet) and always leave
them alone.
• Alligators are nocturnal animals, more active during the night. After dark, avoid fresh and brackish bodies
of water, though alligators sometimes lurk in salt water. Unprovoked bites will often occur at the edge of the
water.
• Never feed alligators; it encourages them to lose their natural fear of people.
• Small animals, like pets, and small children are generally more at risk than large adults.
• Female alligators protect their nests by hissing and opening their mouths; this does not mean they are
preparing to attack.
• Alligators under 4 feet in length are not considered a threat to humans.
As long as residents have a healthy respect for wildlife, there are opportunities to live and let live. Brochures
about coexisting with alligators and crocodiles are available at the Clubhouse Information Wall.

LALGA
By Lydia Fichtman
The LALGA finished out the month of June with an
amazing Nine, Wine and Dine event. The nine-hole
scramble, which turned out to be a three-hole
scramble due to extreme weather conditions, really
went off without a hitch. A huge shout out to Vicki
Moore and the girls from the Nest who worked
tirelessly to see that everyone had enough wine
and food during the event. A special thanks to
Mary Lou Wheat and Lydia Fichtman for organizing
the event and having the tough job of taste testing
the wines before they were ordered. Brandi Barrett
from Johnson Brothers in Tampa brought plenty of
delicious wine to sample. Thank you Brandi! Due to
its popularity the league will run a Mulligan and
Martini Party at the end of September. Keep an
eye out for further information.
July’s games of “5” club and the “Christmas in
July” tournament were sensational. What a way to
spend those dog days of summer! Thanks to Jackie
Tressler and Tassy D’Angelo for their help with the
tournament. The holiday luncheon of turkey
croissants with caprese salad and a brownie
dessert were delicious. A shout out to Vicki Moore,
Sandra and the girls from the Eagle’s Nest for
making the event very festive. Thank you to Ian
and Matt for their help from the clubhouse. And,
finally, a special thanks to Mary Lou Wheat and
Lydia Fichtman for organizing this summer
tournament. Congratulations to all the winners!
The Red Hoagland Challenge is running strong and
the current front runners are: 1st Place -“T” Utting

Meet Patti Adame
Patti, the oldest of seven, comes from
Central Illinois, the Starved Rock area.
She attended weekend college at
26
North Central in Naperville while working full
time. She holds a degree in accounting, and at her
job in St. Louis, met her mate of 23 years, Jeff. Jeff
and Patti wintered in Lake Placid, Florida from
2016 to 2018 and decided in 2018 to purchase a
home in Lake Ashton, still as snowbirds. In 2020,
they moved to Lake Ashton full time, due to the
incredible amenities offered them here in the
community. Patti has been tinkering at golf since
her twenties and originally joined the Niners
because she is still working part time. After cutting
back on her hours, she wanted to play more golf,
so she became a member of the LALGA. How does
she feel about the league? “It is awesome!” Patti,
welcome to the LALGA!

Tuesday and Wednesday July
5-6 for a 4-Person scramble
Par-3 ringer tournament with
lunch on Wednesday. It was a
BIG hit! Even with the summer
heat upon us, there was a great
turn-out and many comments
about “Let’s do it again!” During the first day of
the tournament, we also had an exciting event:
HOLE-IN-ONE! Congratulations Janet Luke for a
Hole-In-One on 12 West, which helped her team
tie for first place in the first flight with a score of
48. Winners in the second flight scored 50. Par is

LAKE ASHTON COMMUNITY
ACTION COMMITTEE
By Shelley Miller
The booming residential housing developments in
our area are straining the roads, water, sewer and
power we all enjoy. The LA Community Action
Committee was formed to advocate for changes
we would like to see to ensure the safety and
welfare of our residents. The planned widening
of Thompson Nursery Road has been a high
priority concern. The Polk Board of County
Commissioners recently earmarked $26.7 million
in their next fiscal budget for Thompson Nursery
Road Phase 2 (West Lake Ruby Road to US-27).
For more information on this important
development, please see the article on the LA
Community Action Committee forum on
LakeAshtonLiving.com. If you have additional
comments, they can be sent via email to
LakeAshtonCommunityAction@gmail.com.

By Connie Strassberg
Time is flying by and it’s already midway through
summer. Lake Ashton is very tropical and a lot of
LA activities are on hiatus - but not LA Rockers!
They continue to meet in the HFC Community
Center on alternate Wednesdays from 2 to 4 pm.
Various members are sharing their skills doing a
lot of "paint what you enjoy painting”. Try your
hand at rock painting — newcomers are always
welcome and will be lent the supplies needed for
the first meeting. It really doesn't matter if you
can draw or paint. Even something as simple as
painting the background and writing an
encouraging word on a rock is guaranteed to
bring a smile to someone's face. If you are here
and want to enjoy a lovely afternoon with a great
group of people, please join the meetings August
10 and 24. In order to attend, join the Facebook
group "LA Rockers" or contact either MJ Richards
(mjmr i chards517@gma i l . com) or Connie
Strassberg (cbs1949@aol.com). If meetings are
canceled at the last minute, it will be posted on
the LA Rockers Facebook group page. If in doubt,
check before you come. Please continue sending
prayers for Alice Mayer's recovery.

Thursday of the month in the Pavilion will be

LA SWIM CLUB
By Sandy White
Congratulations to fitness member, Chip Inman,
who has completed a virtual swim to Ft.
Lauderdale. He previously swam to Daytona Beach
and back. That sure is a lot of laps in our indoor
pool. Chip and others keep track of their laps on a
chart that is in the locker room hallway. Others are
welcome to add their name (or nickname) and
keep track. It's great motivation to stick with
fitness swimming and fun to do with friends.
Did you know some LASC members ride their
bikes to their workouts? Almost everyday, one of
the early birds (those who are in the water at HFC
opening), Sharon Swanson, rides her bike to the
HFC, does a water workout, and rides home.
Welcome to new members Gena Thornburg &
Janet Mutz. We are excited to have you join us!
LA Singles is a social group that plans activities for
single residents. The group meets monthly on the
first Sunday of the month at 2 pm in the
Clubhouse Ballroom. In July, the group discussed
several outings and get togethers. Plans were
discussed for dinners and lunches during July. The
group collected and wrapped gifts for five senior
UPCOMING: So far four members are aiming for a
Regional Senior Games swim meet in Gainesville in
September. Some are also aiming for one in
October in Sebring and for the annual Polk County
meet in February. Most Senior Games meets have
not been held for the past two years due to
COVID, so some swimmers are anxious to get
back into the routine and aim for Regional, State
championships, and possibly the Nationals. To go
to the state meet, one has to qualify at a regional
meet. Senior competition is divided into two
genders, 10 age groups, and 14 swim events.
THANK YOU to the LA Garden Club for their
additional efforts to beautify the inside and
outside of the HFC pool and grounds. It looks
great!

at 419-708-3320 or georgerogers4321@gmail.com. In
light of the recent surge in Covid BA.5 infections and
its reported heightened severity masks are strongly

has not had a vaccine, or booster shot, or an actual
infection of a prior variant. Free masks are available at
the bridge sessions for those requesting them.
LAKE ASHTON PICKLEBALL
ASSOCIATION
By Chuck Caesar
The Lake Ashton
Pickleball Association
held its first Pickleball
Mixer of 2022 on July
2. Twenty-two people
participated in the
event and enjoyed the
beautiful day and lots of
fun pickleball. It was also a great time to enjoy some
refreshing watermelon and popsicles while getting to
know more of our fellow pickleball members. The
Women’s portion of the mixer was won by Bev Hines
with Cathy Liska in second place. The winner for the
men was Ro Thornburg. Larry Fabian and Earl Schley
tied for second place. Carl Boast and Sue Fitzgerald
won the Spirit Award.
Some exciting pickleball court improvements are in
process. Thanks to the support of the LAIICDD, all
four courts will be resurfaced and new wind screens
will be installed around the outer perimeter of the
courts. This may actually have been completed in late
July. A bulletin board will also be installed at the
courts so important information for players can be
posted. If you are interested in learning how to play,
please come out to join during open play times from 8
to 10:30 am Monday through Saturday. There are
always players available to teach you the basics. On
Tuesdays and Thursdays, courts 1 and 2 are reserved
for beginner and intermediate play.
If you already play and would like to join the Lake
Ashton Pickleball Association, you can stop by the
Clubhouse to sign up. The dues are $10 per year or
$25 for three years. The monies that we collect are
used to provide pickleballs, purchase items for the
courts and to sponsor events for our members. Once
you become a member, you will receive emails to
update you on any upcoming events or items of
interest to the group. Hope to see you at the courts!
