In 2004, James Owen wrote a book called Cowboy
Ethics. When James was a young man, his hero’s
growing up were cowboys. More than just characters on
the silver screen, the cowboy represented a rugged, yet
true, way of life. They live by a “code”. In James’ book,
he highlights ten principles to live by:
President’s Message
Jason Tompkins
Bendsen Signs and Graphics
I recently attended a meeting where James Owen was the
keynote speaker. Many, if not most of you, probably
have no idea who James Owen is. In full disclosure,
neither did I. James Owen spent his career in the
investment field, but now speaks to groups about, well,
being a better person. It sounds really simple, but I am
afraid it is not as commonplace as it once was.
• Live Each Day with Courage
• Talk Pride in Your Work
• Always Finish What You Start
• Do What Has to Be Done
• Be Tough, But Fair
• When You Make a Promise, Keep It
• Ride for the Brand
• Talk Less and Say More
• Remember That Some Things Aren’t For Sale
• Know Where to Draw the Line
As business professionals, we are faced with both
victories and defeats. We are faced with success and
failures. We are up and we are down; sometimes all in a
five-minute time period! What these ten principles
represent, for me, is a foundation to building on no
matter how good or how bad it might be. I believe that
our association is a part of that foundation. We must rely
on each other through all that we face. We are much
stronger when we are accountable to one another.

President’s Message
…..Continued from previous page
Finally, I wanted to take a moment to honor one of our
founders. Paul Corrington was the former owner of C.
Bendsen Company. Eventually that company became
Bendsen Signs and Graphics. Paul was also one of the
founding members of the Illinois Signs Association. Paul was
the very first recipient of the Mary Ely Award; the highest
award that our association bestows. Without question, Paul
was one of the giants in our industry. He was a real “sign
man”. He loved this association, and even in retirement,
followed the happenings of the Illinois Sign Association very
closely. Paul passed away on August 29th at the age of 94.
While many who read his newsletter may never have known
Paul, many did and remember his with great fondness.
Are we ready to be the cowboys and cowgirls of our
industry? Are we willing to look in the mirror each day, and
without saying a word, know the code that we will live by
and conduct ourselves that day. For me, it is a work in
progress. I rely on each of you to help make me be better. For
all of us, it’s the Paul Corrington’s of the world who helped
pave the before us so that we might be the best we can be.
What are you going to do today to “leave it better than you found it?”

Paul Rodney Corrington
ISA President 1970 Maury Ely Recipient 1979
JULY 20, 1925 – AUGUST 29, 2019
Paul R. Corrington (94) beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather
and great-great grandfather passed away peacefully in his home August 29, 2019
surrounded by his loving family.
Paul was born to Paul A. and Genevieve (Reinbach) Corrington on July 20, 1925
in New Berlin, Illinois. He was one of four children. He married Geraldine (Jeri)
B. Danford on July 12, 1943, eight days before his 18th birthday. Paul leaves a
legacy of six children, Steve (Bev), of Ormond Beach, FL., John, of Firestone,
CO., David (Audrey), of Normal, IL., Sherry Walker (Joe), of Firestone, CO.,
Toni Corrington-Rusciano (Rick), of Firestone, CO., Scott (Kalei) of Mead, CO.,
21 grand children, and several great and great-great grand children.
Paul was a Proud WWII Veteran, serving his country as a Navy Corpsman from
September 30, 1943 to January 22, 1946. He completed his Hospital Corpsman/OR Tech training and received
his certifications at the US Naval Hospital in San Diego, California. He served in the Asiatic Pacific. He would
often recall being aboard ship when the Commander came over the loudspeaker and announced the Atomic
Bomb had been dropped on Hiroshima. He said everyone wondered – “what’s an Atomic Bomb”! He was
extremely honored and proud to serve his Country.
The day after returning home to his wife and son in Decatur, IL, he began working for C. Bendsen Sign
Company where had previously known and became friends with owner, Chris Bendsen. He later purchased the
sign company, now known as Bendsen Signs & Graphics and served as owner/operator for 56 years. He was
well known and highly respected in the national sign industry and received several honors and awards
throughout his career in the industry. Everyone knew Paul as a kind honorable man; his word was his bond,
making many a business deal, even million-dollar deals, with a handshake. Paul sold his company and it is still
thriving to this day.
Upon his retirement he and his wife Jeri, moved to Firestone, CO where several of their children reside.
On the 10th Anniversary of 9/11, Paul went on the Northern Colorado Honor Flight. It truly was one of the
greatest honors of his life. He bonded with many fellow Veterans and was extremely grateful for the friendship
that continued through the years.
Paul leaves behind not only a wonderful family legacy, but precious
friends and many neighbors who have lovingly cared for him. And, of
course, we can’t leave out their furry companion of many years,
Rocky; who was always by his side and of great comfort to him. Paul
never Dad never met a stranger. He was a man of great integrity and
honor. He served his Country proudly and created a successful business
for 56 years.

PATENT FOR KEYSER INSDUSTRIES’ FLEX OUTDOOR DISPLAY SYSTEM PUBLISHED
Keyser Industries, Inc., Evergreen Park, IL, is proud to report that a
second patent application for their innovative FLEX display system was
published by the United States Patent and Trademark Office July 4, 2019
as publication No. 2019-0208673 this second application adds to
Keyser’s issued Patent No. 10,244,669. These innovative display
solutions, invented by Keyser’s Experimental Engineer Nick Lee, is the
world’s first technology agnostic signage solution.
This weatherproof, adaptable, design allows customers to grow into
digital, and more importantly, never grow out of it. The FLEXtower
offers the most innovative cooling system design, allowing for the most
vital components to be shielded from the elements.
Endless configurations are permitted because FLEX display systems can
be transformed to accommodate all technology configurations. By adding
FLEXbrackets to the FLEXtower, any combination of signage is possible.
A canopy system is also available.
Other patent applications are pending. As always, Keyser display
systems are made in the USA. For further information see

News from International Sign Association
Statement on Thomas v. Bright Ruling
A significant federal court case has been decided that could change the way
that signs, graphics and visual communications are regulated. In Thomas v.
Bright, the U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed that the government
cannot distinguish between on-premise and off-premise signage because it is an
unconstitutional content-based distinction.
At this point, the Thomas decision applies only to laws that prohibit offpremise
signs with non-commercial speech in the Sixth Circuit's jurisdiction:
Tennessee, Kentucky, Michigan and Ohio. It remains to be seen whether
Tennessee will appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.

ISA Builds Partnership with The Wrap Institute
Building on the successful ISA Wrap Experience, ongoing programs will provide further expertise and advocacy for wrap
professionals. One of the largest-scale initiatives will be a series of educational events and hands-on training at ISA
International Sign Expo 2020, held April 1-4 in Orlando.
ISA International Sign Expo 2020 is just one element of a multi-pronged relationship between ISA, The Wrap Institute
and Justin Pate, widely regarded as the foremost authority on vehicle wraps. In addition to the tradeshow, the agreement
will allow the two organizations to work together on education events. Justin Pate and ISA’s Craig Campbell discuss the
partnership in a video posted at signs.org/wrapfurther.

Don't Miss Out on Sign MFG Day! [October 4]
Each year in October, companies in the sign, graphics
and visual communications industry host facility tours
to encourage students to explore exciting and diverse
career opportunities within the industry.
Sign Manufacturing Day makes a difference! Visiting
students are even more interested and engaged in
industry careers after a facility tour. In 2018, 86 percent
of touring students said they would consider a career in
manufacturing or sign manufacturing after the tour.
Whereas before the event, only 36 percent said they had
considered a career in manufacturing.
What's in it for you? Recruit your future workers,
develop internship and co-op programs and build relationships with your community and technical schools.

Illuminated Sign Conspicuity – What Factors Make a
Sign Noticeable and Legible?
A sign in isolation may meet all the criteria for visibility, legibility, and readability.
However, when that sign is placed in the urban environment, where it competes with other
signs, it can become essentially invisible.
Read more in the Sign Research Foundation's report on Illuminated Sign Conspicuity at

Join an ISA Committee in 2020!
ISA leadership will appoint committee members for the 2020 program
year later this fall. Listed below are the current committees of the ISA.
All members will be invited to participate. Look at their job
descriptions. Most committees meet via conference call or huddle up at
the annual meeting or Regional Meet and Greets. If you are interested.
Reach out to a member of the board or Executive Director Russ
Salzman with your interest. You will be notified of your appointment.
Committees of the ISA have the responsibility to execute actions, tactics, and strategies in support of the organization’s
values, vision and mission. Committee goals and appointments are assigned at the beginning of each year. Committee
chairs will make periodic updates to the president officers and board.
Task Forces are periodically appointed to address specific projects or initiatives which disband once completed.
Work Groups may be appointed to oversee or direct a specific tactic or action plan.
AUCTION COMMITTEE
The auction committee is responsible for fundraising
primarily focused on our scholarship activities and
association operations during the fall conference.
MAURY ELY COMMITTEE
The Maury Ely committee is responsible for the
promotion and review of nominations for the award and
the ultimate selection of the award honoree. If a
candidate is selected its will be awarded during the Fall
Conference and Trade Expo.
MEMBERSHIP DEVELOPMENT COMMITTEE
The membership development committee’s role is to
identify programs, activities, and services that will
enhance membership for sign companies and the allied
trade members. The committee will develop a list of key
challenges and needs in the industry providing guidance
for educational sessions, regional events and media
content. In addition, this committee has the
responsibility to foster an environment with tactics for
membership recruitment and growth.
CONFERENCE PROGRAM COMMITTEE
The conference program committee is responsible for the
overall vision and staging of conferences and
expositions. Duties include the identification and
selection of speakers, sessions, panels and other
activities which may include a trade expo, Designer’s
Symposium, golf outing, awards banquet, and other
social and networking experiences.
SCHOLARSHIP COMMITTEE
The scholarship committee is responsible for the
standards, promotion, management, and selection of
candidates. The preliminary budget is $2000 of
scholarships to be awarded.
SIGN DESIGN COMMITTEE
The sign design committee is responsible for the annual
design contest which includes the promotion and
evaluation of award winners in categories for
recognizing excellence in the sign industry. The
committee meets once in person 4-6 weeks prior to the
fall conference to review all the submittals and
determines the category 1st and 2nd place winners. “The
Best of the Best” award will be chosen from the winners
by ballot of conference participants during the fall
meeting.
CHICAGO SIGN CODE TASK FORCE
The goal of this exciting initiative is to bring a sweeping
overhaul of the Chicago sign ordinance. The goal is to
elevate this change as an important campaign matter for
the spring mayoral elections. Working with a Small
Business Advisory Council and the International Sign
Association, ISA representatives will be responsible for
promoting, surveying, and representing the Illinois sign
industry and serve on the coalition with SBAC and local
chambers.
WEBSITE / SOCIAL MEDIA WORK GROUP
This assignment is responsible for the monitoring and
upgrading of our website and Facebook page as well as
other social media applications and overall digital
efficiencies for the organization.
