By Christopher Roberson
O
n the eve of Everett’s
first day of school, State
Senator Sal DiDomenico announced
that he had secured
$7.3 million for the district
in the state’s fiscal year 2020
budget. During the August 26
School Committee meeting,
he said Everett received $6 million
more this year in Chapter
70 funding.
He also dispelled the notion

school year. (Advocate Photo by

that the state has reduced education
funding allocations. “Funding
for Chapter 70 has never been cut
for as long as I’ve been a senator,”
said DiDomenico, adding that Everett’s
new Chapter 70 figure represents
the largest increase the
district has seen in 50 years.
In addition, $75,000 will be
used for music programming,
Vol. 28, No. 35
$50,000 will be used for technology
improvements and $75,000
will be used to hire an opioid
treatment counselor. DiDomenico
said another $100,000 will
be invested to continue funding
for Engineering is Elementary,
the district’s latest initiative under
the Science, Technology, Engineering
and Mathematics curriculum.
He said the remaining
$1 million will be used to allow
MassHealth families to apply for
SNAP benefits.
DiDomenico was also pleased
with the progress that has been
made with the Breakfast After the
Bell program. “Everett has been
ahead of the curve on that,” he
said, adding that he is cosponsoring
a bill that would make Breakfast
After the Bell a law.

Mayor pens letter in support of
Mystic River Pedestrian Bridge
O
n August 21, Mayor Carlo
DeMaria wrote to the Department
of Waterways Regulation
Program in support of the
Mystic River Pedestrian Bridge.
“The construction of the Mystic
River Pedestrian Bridge is
truly a top priority for the City
of Everett, one that the City is
counting on to provide additional
mobility to support development
on Lower Broadway
as well as complete the bicycle
and pedestrian network to the
North Shore,” said DeMaria. “We
believe that any environmental
impacts related to the construction
of the bridge are outweighed,
by an order of magnitude,
by the positive effects of
creating a new transit, bicycle
and pedestrian connection to
the City of Everett.”
On August 15, the Everett
Conservation Commission approved
the Order of Conditions
for the Mystic River Pedestrian
Bridge to continue to move
forward. DeMaria informed the
Department of Waterways that
the City of Everett is working

“diligently to not only construct
a new head house expansion at
the Orange Line station at Assembly
Row, but also complete
the Northern Strand Bike Path.
Each of these projects is critical
to maximizing the connectivity
of the Mystic River Bridge,
and the City is moving forward
at full speed to complete them
both in anticipation of the new
bridge.”
“The construction of a new
head house passenger terminal,
the completion of the
Northern Strand Bike Path extension
and the pedestrian
bridge, are all part of the larger
vision that highlights our
spectacular riverfront and improves
public access to the
water and to the T for the first
time in generations,” said DeMaria.

Joint Committee for Children’s Healthcare shares commitment for a brighter, healthier future for all
O
n Friday, October 25, the
Joint Committee for Children’s
Healthcare in Everett (JCCHCE)
will be hosting a special
gala event at the Royal Sonesta
Hotel in Cambridge to celebrate
25 years of assisting families
and individuals with health
insurance coverage. The JCCHCE
has helped people in Everett and
more than 70 other communities.
The nonprofit organization
will be joined by clients, parents,
educators, health and wellness
experts, health and civic organizations,
community members
and national, state and local
leaders, funders, staff, volunteers
and many more to celebrate the
work that has been done, but also
to inspire to strive for a brighter,
healthier future for all.
The JCCHCE has directly
served and supported more than
225,000 people to gain access to
Massachusetts health care. Below
is a testimony from one individual
who will forever be grateful
for the work and commitment
of the JCCHCE.
“In November, 2016 our mother
was found unresponsive at her
home suffering from a medical
event that caused her to experience
hypoxia to her brain. The
lack of oxygen to her brain has
left her without the ability to walk,
talk and all of the day-to-day functions
we take for granted.
“The harsh reality is that this
“medical event” was caused by an
overdose on drugs. As many of us
know, addiction, depression and
other mental health issues are not
treated and it can be hard to find
the right help. Our family, friends
and maybe even you suffer every
day with personal challenges
without knowing the proper
tools and resources to get the
help you deserve. Our mother is
fighting every day to learn life all
over again & Doctors cannot predict
the final outcome of her recovery
because there are many
uncertainties associated with
brain injury.
“I moved to Massachusetts
from Florida with my 4 year old
daughter to help care for my disabled
mother. Life at the time
was very challenging and the
unknown was extremely scary.
JCCHCE in the time of need was
there to assist us in the disability
application process.
“My family and I are forever
grateful and indebted to the JCCHCE
and would love to express
my gratitude. Please continue to
support their mission and their
outstanding and important assistance.”
Together
we have much to celebrate,
and with your help and
tax-exempt donation, we will be
able to achieve so much more in
the years to come!
Twenty-five Years … and the
Journey Continues …

Kiwanis Club 5K Walk for Ersilia on Sept. 28 at Glendale Park
Fundraiser to benefit services to end domestic violence
T
he Kiwanis Club of Everett,
in collaboration with
the City of Everett and the
Cataldo family, is conducting
a 1st Annual 5K Walk for Ersilia
on Saturday, September 28,
2019 at Glendale Park, Everett,
in honor of our beloved
former member and Vice President,
the late Ersilia Cataldo
Matarazzo. Our aim is to raise
awareness about the problem
of domestic violence and the
severe destruction it produces,
especially for women and
families. All proceeds from the
Walk will be given directly to
the Ersilia Cataldo Matarazzo
Memorial Fund by Everett Kiwanis,
a 501(c)(3) public charity.
This fund will support domestic
violence victims’ advocacy
programs that provide
comprehensive services
to people in our community
whose lives have been directly
impacted by domestic
violence: the award winning
Portal To Hope and Everett’s
model program – recognized
by the United States
Conference of Mayors – the
Everett Victim Advocacy Project
(EVAP). This fund will also
endow a scholarship in Ersilia’s
name for Everett students
with demonstrated community
service and a concentration
in social work.
Together, we will engage Everett
citizens and the broader
community to come together
in a fun and basic activity of
neighborly camaraderie that
also projects our caring humanity.
