By Denise Tessier
To all of the Lake Ashton friends and neighbors who
donated to the Alzheimer’s Walk as part of our
shredding event: because of your generosity, we
were able to send a donation for an
AMAZING $800 to this fabulous charity! On behalf
of our Tessier Trotters ALZ Walk Team, THANK
YOU!
HOMELESS GRADUATING
SENIORS
By Doris Reisinger
As the time for donations ended on April 10, I was truly
astounded at the totals. As Dr. Caba asked, you all are
truly WARRIORS! The total donations of money totaled
$19,529! This was with the help of some great
organizations. The Italian Club ($400) and Shuffling
Squares ($750). The total also included 10 gift cards
totaling $285. Six bags of domestic items were
collected along with 60 blankets from BOLLA. A total of
64 residents participated.
Vickie Griffith, the head of this worthy cause, expresses
here sincere thanks in this cause. As one graduate
expressed to her, with a hug,"You have no idea what
this help means to my life and spirit."

Many of you have already noticed many changes
occurring at the Health and Fitness Center. The HFC
has two new employees. Steve Brennan will be
working, part-time in the maintenance department
while Rebekah Spangler is our newest certified fitness
instructor teaching Pilates among other health-related
fitness classes. If you see these two new employees
stop by and introduce yourself.
May means the school year is winding down and spring
is in full bloom. May has something for everyone. May
Day is an ancient spring festival celebrated in many
countries around the world, often with flowers festivals,
parades and dancing around the May pole.
Although the HFC doesn’t have a May pole to dance
around, there are plenty of dances to attend during the
month of May, starting out with a Fiesta on May 2nd
featuring Lake Ashton’s house band, Perfect Pitch.
Want to celebrate Cinco De Mayo, why not drop by the
HFC to learn how to do the Salsa during the Lake
Ashton Dance Class on May 5 at 4:00 pm. May 9
features Speed Limit 70 playing some of your favorite
70’s tunes, and on Mother’s Day, Square Dancing takes
place in the Community Center. We wish all a safe
Memorial Day holiday, and although the HFC office is
closed on May 26, the building is always open for the
residents.
This is a friendly reminder that the HFC is issuing new Golf Cart Stickers. All golf carts in Lake Ashton must be
registered for accountability, safety and identification; thereby replacing Lake Ashton's existing golf cart
stickers. Residents are asked to bring either their Lake Ashton ID or a Florida driver’s license with their Lake
Ashton address when they come in to get their new golf cart stickers at the HFC, Monday through Friday,
between the hours of 10:00 am and 3:00 pm.
The HFC is once again participating in the Summer ‘Music’ series featuring five different bands over a fivemonth
period. These dances are pay at the door with no pre-purchase, and if you wish to reserve a table
($10), you may do so the month before the dance takes place. There are also three special events starting in
June with the Bob Seger Experience, so be sure to watch for email flyers with all the details or stop by the
HFC Activities Desk for more information.
We wish all our snowbird residents who have left Lake Ashton a happy and safe summer and look forward to
your return in the fall months.

REMINDERS
Please use caution when entering and exiting the
community via the Thompson Nursery Road and CR
653 entrances. The entry gates are not on a sensor, they
close after each vehicle. When entering Lake Ashton via
the Thompson Nursery Road gate please stop just
before the stop sign and wait until the vehicle in front of
you has gone under the gate before proceeding
forward. Please ensure the gate is going in the
downward direction before proceeding from
the stop sign to ensure the reader has read your RFID
tag. If you get too close to the vehicle in front of you it is
possible the reader will not read your tag and start
going down before you are able to cross. Waiting just
before the stop sign for the car in front to proceed will
eliminate the need to back up so the reader can read
your tag, causing backups at the gate.
In addition there have been many reported cases of
tailgating when entering the community. Tailgating
increases the risk of gate strikes. If any of the gates are
damaged due to negligence on the driver's part, any
costs involved with the replacement of the gate arm will
be the responsibility of the driver (Approximately $770,
currently).
When exiting the community, any vehicle close to the
height of the overhang should use the right lane to exit
the community even if turning left on Thompson
Nursery Road. Not doing so puts your vehicle at risk of
damage not to mention possible property damage that
will be the responsibility of the driver. If unsure if the
vehicle is close to the height of the overhang please err
on the side of caution and use the right side to exit.
AMENITY ACCESS CARDS
Residents should not use their Amenity Access Card
to let anyone in to any of the locked Amenity doors/
gates. Residents should only use their Amenity
Access Card to open the pool gates and should not
attempt to open the gate any other way. We need
your help! Please ensure doors and pool gates are
closed tightly after entering and exiting. If the doors
and gates are not locking properly please contact
staff. This system is only effective if used properly. An
unlocked pool gate could result in the pool being
shut down so please help ensure these gates are
closed properly at all times. If you need an Amenity
Access Card please come to the Clubhouse Office
Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 10 am - 1 pm to have
your picture taken and card issued. Please be sure to
bring a photo ID. Appointments can be made for
anyone not able to come in at those times.
GOLF CART STICKERS
The HFC began issuing new Golf Cart Stickers. All
golf carts must be registered for safety,
identification, and accountability, thereby replacing
Lake Ashton's existing golf cart stickers. Lake
Ashton residents can get their new golf cart stickers
at the HFC Monday through Friday between 10am
and 3 pm. Please be advised that you will need your
Lake Ashton ID or Driver's License with your Lake
Ashton address on it. If you have any questions,
please call the HFC at 863-595-1562 to talk to
Krystle or Louise.

HIGHLIGHT
This is an excerpt from the Joint Amenity Facilities
Policies. The full policy can be found online
at lakeashtoncdd.com and lakeashton2cdd.org.
Questions regarding these policies can be directed
to Christine Wells, LA(LW)CDD Community
Director or Karen Van Kirk, LA(WH)CDD
Community Director. Contact information can be
found on page 3.
III. AUTHORIZED USERS
Only Patrons and Guests are authorized to use the
Amenity Facilities (each such “Users”), as further
provided within these Policies and below;
provided, however, certain events may be available
to the general public where permitted by the
Districts and subject to payment of any applicable
fees and satisfaction of any other applicable
requirements. Specifically, Users are subject to the
following:
RESIDENTS: Residents, upon producing proper
identification, can access and use all Amenity
Facilities within the Districts. They are entitled to
twelve (12) guest registrations per year, up to four
(4) guests at a time, unless other arrangements
have been made with an Amenity Manager.
RENTERS/LEASEHOLDERS: Individuals who rent
or lease a residential unit in the Districts for a
period of at least ninety (90) consecutive days may
be designated by the Owner of the residential unit
as the beneficial Users of the Owner’s membership
privileges for purposes of Amenity Facilities use.
The Renter/Leaseholder may be required to
acquire a membership with respect to the
residence which is being rented or leased, as well
as purchase an ID card in order to be entitled to
use the Amenity Facilities. A Renter/Leaseholder
who is designated as the beneficial User of the
Resident’s membership shall be entitled to the
same rights and privileges to use the Amenity
Facilities as the Resident.
During the period when a Renter/Leaseholder is
designated as the beneficial User of the
membership, the Resident shall not be entitled to
use the Amenity Facilities with respect to that
membership.
Owners and Non-Resident Members shall be
responsible for all property damage charges
incurred by themselves or their Guests/Renters/
Leaseholders which remain unpaid after 60 days,
following the customary billing and collection
procedure established by the Districts. Owners and
Non-Resident Members are responsible for the
deportment of their respective Guests/Renters/
Leaseholders.
NON-RESIDENT MEMBERS: Non-Residents may
pay an Annual User Fee and have access to all
Amenity Facilities. As previously set by each
District, both District’s Annual User Fee for any
NonResident is outlined in Exhibit A and is split
evenly amongst LA CDD and LAII CDD, as
permitted by law. This payment must be paid-in-full
at the time of completion of the Non-Resident
Member application and the corresponding
agreement. This fee will cover membership to all
Amenity Facilities for the current fiscal year from
the date of receipt of payment by either District.
Each subsequent annual membership fee shall be
paid-in-full by October 1. There is no proration of
fees. Each District retains the authority to establish
its own Annual User Fee; however, at this time it is
the intent of both Districts to set both Annual User
Fees at the same level. The Annual User Fee may
be increased, not more than once per year, by
actions of the respective Boards, to reflect
increased costs of operation of the Amenity
Facilities. This membership is not available for
commercial purposes and is non-transferable.
GUESTS: All Guests,
regardless of age, must
register with the office of the Amenity Manager
and sign a waiver of liability prior to using the
Amenity Facilities. The Patron inviting the Guest
must be present upon registration, unless other
arrangements have been made with the Amenity
Manager’s office.

year. Guest passes may be issued for a maximum
of fifteen (15) consecutive days as correlated with
the guest’s length of stay and may only be
extended once for a maximum of thirty (30) total
consecutive days. A guest cannot be registered for
more than sixty (60) total days in a 365-day period.
A Guest’s ability to be registered may be reviewed
by an Amenity Manager if exceeding the standards
listed above.
All Guests under eighteen (18) years of age must
be accompanied at all times while using the
Amenity Facilities by a parent, guardian, or adult
Patron over twenty-one (21) years of age.
Patrons are responsible for ensuring that their
Guests adhere to the Policies set forth herein and
any and all actions taken by said Guest. Violation
by a Guest of any of these Policies as set forth by
the Districts could result in loss of that Patron’s
privileges and membership as set forth in Section
VI –Suspension and Termination of Privileges.
VISITOR MANAGEMENT
RESIDENT PORTAL
Registration for the TekWave Visitor Management
Resident Portal is now active. This portal allows
residents to manage their guests and resident
profile. Residents can register guests ahead of
time to enter the gate, send them a QR code to
enter the community, and sign up to receive
notifications of guest arrivals at the gate, and
more. It is not a requirement to pre-register your
guests to enter the community — this is just a
tool available to use. Guests will still need to be
registered at the Clubhouse or HFC if using the
amenities.
A representative from Securitas will be in the
Clubhouse Ballroom every Tuesday in May
from 10 am - 1 pm to assist residents with
signing up for this Portal. Please stop by if
you have questions about the system, need
help getting signed up, or need help with
how to use the Portal.

Wildlife Corner
Photo & Article By Barbara Ann Comer
The ruby throated hummingbird is
a gem flying on wings and a year-round resident
in Lake Ashton. The male sports the iridescent
ruby-red gorget. The hummingbird family, found
only in the Americas, includes the smallest birds
in the world. Their iridescent colors shine
brilliantly depending on the light. These highlyterritorial
acrobats fly up, down, backwards,
sideways and hover in one spot on wing beats as
fast as up to 80 times per second. What's the
best way to attract them? Hummingbird feeders
are a lot of work to keep clean and safe for the
birds. Those who use feeders should not use dye
since it may harm the birds. Instead, a red ribbon
tied to the feeder can get their attention.
Landscaping with a small tree surrounded by
Firebush or Firecracker is the safest and most
effective way to provide perches and the highenergy
nectar they need and love. Keep your
eyes open — they are really fast!

The Lake Ashton Compliance and Architectural
Review Committees hold regular office hours on the
third Wednesday of each month at 3:30 pm in the
Clubhouse Card Room. This is a great opportunity
for residents to come and discuss any questions or
concerns you might have related to ARC requests or
Compliance issues. Whether you have general
questions or simply want to meet our teams, we are
here to help. Both Committees are in need of
additional members. Please consider volunteering to
assist your community and fellow residents.

PROTECT LAKE ASHTON’ S
PONDS
Summer is on its way, which means scorching days
with lots of sunlight. Algae development occurs
most frequently during the summer months, when
rainfall and pond water temperatures rise. There
are numerous ways residents may help keep Lake
Ashton's Ponds attractive right now.
• Avoid overfertilization and careless application.
• Remove pet waste from your yard.
• Ensure that landscape providers mow lawns with
the chute pointing away from the pond bank.
These actions will help to reduce nutrient runoff
from summer rainfall. When the nutrients in the
water get too high, the chance of an algae bloom
increases. If an algae bloom occurs in a Lake
Ashton CDD pond, the CDD contracts with an
aquatics provider to treat the algae biweekly. Email
Matt Fisher with any questions or concerns at
mfisher@lakeashtoncdd.com.
PLEASE
REMEMBER TO
CLOSE
UMBRELLAS AT
THE POOL &
PET PLAY PARKS !
It costs the District
approximately $70 per
umbrella to replace.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
(NW) CORNER
By Fay Wood, NW Chief
Crime Prevention Tips - Always Protect Your Residence!
(Courtesy of Law Enforcement)
• Make your home look occupied.
• Lock all outside doors and windows before you leave
the house or go to bed.
• Leave lights on when you go out.
• Keep your garage door closed and locked.
• Don't allow daily deliveries of mail, newspapers or
flyers build up while you are away.
• Arrange the USPS to hold your mail, or for a friend/
neighbor to help.
• Pushbutton locks are easy for burglars to open. Install
deadbolt locks.
• Sliding glass doors are vulnerable. Special locks are
available for better security.
• Never leave keys under doormats, flowerpots,
mailboxes or other "secret" hiding places -- burglars
know where to look.
• Give out any keys and alarm codes to very few!
• Lock your doors and windows when leaving home.
Most residential burglaries occur during the daytime.
• Use an Alarm System.
With all the new growth surrounding our homes,
programs allowing non residents in (storage, bingo,
restaurant, etc.) and summer trips away beginning, and
simple common sense being careful is a good thing.
Always better safe than sorry!
WILDLIFE ALERT - WATCH
FOR ALL IGATORS
Alligator mating season typically occurs between May
and June. Residents may notice male gators lifting
their tails high and slapping the water with their jaws
to create vibrations throughout the water during
mating season. Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission (FWC) reminds residents to be cautious
when having fun in and around water. The FWC
recommends keeping pets away from the water.
FWC's Nuisance Alligator Hotline: 866.FWC.GATOR
(392-4286). They will give you a reference number
that will need to be provided to staff at the
Clubhouse if the alligator is in a body of water in Lake
Wales or to staff at the HFC if in a body of water in
Winter Haven. Remember, nuisance alligators are
killed, not relocated. Visit http://www.MyFWC.com/
Gators for more information. Be aware of the
possibility of alligators when you are in or near fresh
or brackish water. Bites may occur when people do
not pay close enough attention to their surroundings
near water.
• Alligators are most active between dusk and dawn.
• Dogs and cats are similar in size to the natural prey
of alligators. Don’t allow pets to swim, exercise or
drink in or near waters that may contain alligators.
Dogs often attract an alligator’s interest.
• Leave alligators alone. State law prohibits killing,
harassing or possessing alligators. Handling even
small alligators can result in injury.
• Never feed alligators – it’s dangerous and illegal.
When fed, alligators can overcome their natural
wariness and learn to associate people with food.
When this happens, some of these alligators have to
be removed and killed.
• Dispose of fish scraps in garbage cans at boat
ramps and fish camps. Do not throw them into the
water. Although you are not intentionally
feeding alligators when you do this, the result can
be the same.
SANDHI LL CRANE SAFETY
It’s that time of year again when sandhill crane colts are
seen traveling with their parents. Florida is one of the
few places in the world sandhill cranes can be found
year-round. The year-round residents are the nonmigratory
Florida sandhill cranes, which typically roam in
pairs or small family groups. There are now fewer than
5,000 Florida sandhill cranes across the state and they
are listed as a state-designated threatened species.
Please drive safely throughout Lake Ashton and
remember that it is illegal to feed these birds. This
includes accidental feeding, such as when bird seed is
spilled from bird feeders onto the ground below.

Brad answered all my questions promptly and
professionally. The listing narrative was very important
in the sale of my home. As a result, my home sold the
day after it was listed which exceeded my expectations
and shortened the time for closing and the time for
moving to my new home. All this happened in a slow

By Cal Posner
Assembling in Philadelphia, in the midst
of a conflict already begun, the Second
Continental Congress recognized that a
regular military force was necessary if
the colonists were to have any hope of
standing up to the British Army. On June 14, 1775,
Congress adopted the Massachusetts “Minutemen,”
that had fought the British at Lexington and Concord,
as an American Army and authorized the recruitment
of 10 companies of riflemen. Congress then
appointed one of their own, George Washington, as
Commander-in-Chief of the new Army. On October
13 Congress authorized the founding of the Navy and
on November 10 founded the Marine Corps. To honor
the founding of our nation’s oldest services, the Lake
Ashton Veterans Association is hosting the Tri-service
250th Birthday Ball, June 14 at the Clubhouse. The
evening’s theme is “Remembering the Past,
Defending the Future” and features dinner by Cam’s
Catering, two bottles (red and white) of wine at each
table and two pictures (entry and table) and music by
DJ Wayne for after dinner dancing. Cost is $55/
person, check only, payable to LAVA. For tickets May

LA SINGLES CLUB
By Carol Corley
A fun group of people, Lake Ashton Singles’ Group,
gets together every Sunday at 2 pm in the Clubhouse
— first Sunday of the month is a meeting and cards,
other Sundays are just cards: Five Crown, very easy to
learn. After cards, we go to a local restaurant for
dinner. You would be most welcome to join. In
addition to cards and dinner on Sundays, we have a
get-together at 4 p.m. at the Pavilion on the third
Thursday of most months. The group also makes
plans for occasional lunches out at different
restaurants in Polk County. Interested members of
group were also invited to check out the newly
formed Spanish Class, which is held Tuesdays at 11
a.m. at the HFC card room. We have two teachers,
which make learning fun. There is no cost at all.

what motivates him to volunteer he said “It’s simple: it’s
heartwarming because delivering a hot meal and
making contact with each recipient in many instances is

sharing fellowship and providing a wellness check for

MAGIC YEARS CLUB
By Lynne Judd
Are you someone who loves Walt Disney World or
maybe you want to learn more about it? Then you
are welcome to join the Magic Years Club, which
meets the second Monday of each month at 7 pm
in the HFC Craft Room. Our next meeting will be
on Monday, May 12. Our members have been
quite active in the last couple months! We have
had showings of Coco and Moana 2 in the
Clubhouse Cinema, some have visited WDW to
see the topiaries at the Epcot Flower and Garden
Festival and others have visited the Grand
Floridian, Contemporary or Yacht and Beach Club
Resorts to see the beautiful, oversize Easter eggs
with Disney themes crafted by the chefs of the
different resorts. Some of our members even
went on a special fireworks cruise to see the
Magic Kingdom fireworks from the water. At our
meetings, we share lots of information and
usually end with a trivia quiz. Sometimes, we even
have a "show and tell" with special Disney items
we have collected. So, why don't you join us and
bring any questions you have about WDW?

Starts with You!
Get the Facts About Skin Cancer
Skin cancer is the most
common type of cancer
in the U.S. and worldwide.
If you catch skin cancer
early enough, you can
be A-OK.
1 in 5 Americans will
develop skin cancer
by age 70.
Your risk for melanoma
doubles if you’ve had
more than 5 sunburns.
Every hour, more than
2 people die of
skin cancer.
Since its inception in 1949, Mental Health
Awareness Month has been a cornerstone of
addressing the challenges faced by millions of
Americans living with mental health conditions.
These are some things you can do to prioritize
mental health.
• Take five. Take a deep breath and relax. Even
five minutes to take care of yourself can help.
• Be active. Take a walk, stretch, or exercise.
• Connect with others. Reach out to friends and
family. Talk about your feelings with others.
• Reach out to clergy or others in your faith
community.
• Get help from a professional. Talk to a healthcare
provider about how you are feeling. Make an
appointment with a counselor.
• Unwind and enjoy your favorite activities.
• Keep your mind and body healthy. Research
shows that positive mental health is associated
with better overall health and well-being.
If you or someone you know is struggling or in
crisis, help is available. Call or text 988 to reach
the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline.
Regular daily use of SPF 15
or higher sunscreen
reduces your risk
of melanoma by 50%.
9 Ways You Can Protect Your Skin
1. Seek the shade,
especially between
10 AM and 4 PM.
4. Cover up with clothing,
including a broad-brimmed hat
and UV-blocking sunglasses.
2. Don’t get
sunburned.
3. Avoid tanning,
and never use
UV tanning beds.
5. Keep newborns out
of the sun. Use sunscreen
on babies over the age
of six months.
6. Use a broad-spectrum (UVA/
UVB) sunscreen with an SPF
of 15 or higher every day. For
extended outdoor activity, use a
water-resistant, broad-spectrum
sunscreen with an SPF of 30
or higher.
7. Apply 1 ounce of
sunscreen to your entire
body 30 minutes before
going outside. Reapply
every two hours or after
swimming or sweating.
8. Examine your skin
head-to-toe every month.
9. See a dermatologist
at least once a year for
a professional skin exam.

LAMGA
By David Kubissa
Lunch and golf were on the
menu April 9 when the ever-popular “Beat the Board”
game gave LAMGA members a chance to face off
against a team of four board directors.
Two foursomes beat the board’s score of 16-under par
that called for the two best net scores on each hole.
The winning team carded 25-under par, while the
second-place team had 23-under par. See photos for
the names of golfers who finished atop the
leaderboard.
There will be another golf and grub event this month –
May 7 -- in commemoration of Cinco de Mayo. It will be
a pick-your-partner game with a Mexican-themed lunch
afterward. Two more golf and lunch events are slated
for this summer, one in July and the other in early
September.
