Inaugural ceremony featured tradition and talent

he lions roared, the band
played, the Choral Arts Society
sang and Malden’s elected
officials were sworn in for a new
term. A crowd of families, friends
and supporters turned out Monday
night for the city’s inauguration
at Malden High’s Jenkins
Auditorium. City Messenger Peter
Levine and the Malden Police
and Fire Department’s color
guard added traditional pomp
to the event; religious leaders
offered prayers and blessings;
and the Malden High Step Team
and the Namaste Dance Troupe
brought energy and color to the
ceremony.
Associate Justice Kenneth V.
Desmond, Jr. of the Massachusetts
Appeals Court administered
the oath of office to Mayor
Gary Christenson, who is beginning
his third term as Malden’s
mayor. Christenson spoke briefly
and highlighted the new police
station, the Teen Enrichment
Center and the downtown’s revitalization
as examples of meaningful
change and progress the
city has made since he was first
elected in 2012. He said the city
councillors and members of
the school committee, most of
whom were incumbents who
were elected to new terms, are
beginning a journey of new opportunities.
“The
cost is hard work for
those who choose to get involved
in a way that will be fulfilling
most of the time, frustrating
some of the time and memorable
all of the time,” he said.
Christenson said he wakes up

n a surprise move, the City
Council elected Ward 8 Councillor
Jadeane Sica to serve a second
one-year term as City Council
president during this week’s
inaugural ceremony.
Typically, the gavel changes
hands each year, with councillors
electing members with seniority
who have yet to serve
as City Council president. But
Ward 7 Councillor Neal Anderson
announced that during the
brief closed-door meeting held
during the inauguration, councillors
voted to reelect Sica. It
was only the second time a person
was chosen to serve backto-back
years as City Council
president, said Anderson. The
first time was in 2014 when
councillors voted to stick with
Anderson as City Council president
for a second consecutive
year.
City Council presidents preside
over City Council meetings,
appoint committee chairs
and members and makes sure
council discussions take place
in a democratic way. Anderson
said that over the past year, Sica
brought grace, style, innovation
and fairness to the role. “We look
forward to her leadership next
year,” he added.
Sica thanked fellow councillors
for the show of confidence
and said 2019 was a year the
council accomplished important
work in a way that should
make all members proud. “As
we enter 2020, we are unitKEEP

especially among older

there is less light for Vitamin

People suffering from SAD can

Reach out. Being alone and
lonely are not the same thing,
but if you are feeling particularly
isolated, please seek out

activity groups in your building,
senior centers, volunteering
and civic or religious organizations
are good places
to start. Broaden your friendships.
Do
not abandon healthy

Take a breather. Make
some time for yourself. Even if

Malden: Today, Tomorrow
and Yesterday...saluting Hall
of Famer Helen “Nordie” Nordquist
By Peter F. Levine
A
ll-Star Hall of Fame Inductee
Helen Nordquist started
her Hall of Fame journey at Beebe
Jr. High, where from 19441947
she excelled athletically on
the playing fields of Malden, in
1947 receiving a Beebe “B” and a
certificate for excellence in athletics
(the first female ever to receive
this recognition at Beebe,
by the way)! At MHS she was a
three-sport star – field hockey,
basketball and softball. In 1950,
her senior year, “Nordie” co-captained
the field hockey team
and received the “Best Girl Athlete”
honor and the Kappa Phi
Sorority Cup for “the outstanding
girl athlete.” From there it
was on to the “All American Girls
Professional Baseball League,”
which is a story that deserves its
own space. Which I will provide
at a later date.
Picked up pieces at the Hall of
Fame Banquet...
• The Malden High School
Golden Tornado Club’s 33rd Annual
Hall of Fame Banquet and
Induction Ceremony on Sat.,
Nov. 23 at the Moose Hall was
a most special night. The stars
came out to see some of Malden
High’s best and brightest
take their rightful place in MHS
sports history.
• Athletes, such as Chelsea
Choate from the Class of 2006,
who took her place right alongside
her sister Olivia from the
Class of 2001, making them
one of the few sister tandems
to make the Hall. Congrats ladies!
Well deserved!
• Bobby McVicar received a
hard-earned and way overdue
“Distinguished Service Award,”
and according to Master of Ceremonies
Peter “Panama” Carroll
may have had the shortest
acceptance speech in the 33year
history of the event. Kudos
Bobby for (hopefully) starting a
new trend.
• By the way, Panama did another
excellent job moving the
night along with that wit and
wisdom he acquired hanging
around Amerige Park and
“Icky’s” as a young one.
• John “Cuddles” Willcox from
the Class of 1972 was inducted.
I had a great conversation with
Malden Teen Enrichment Center
Director Cathy MacMullin
a few days after the ceremony,
and she reminisced that when
she was young, all the kids in the
neighborhood (herself included)
wanted to be #23 – Willkie’s
number. Cathy mentioned that
Willkie’s late mom Eunice would
have loved to have been there

of the Hall of Fame MHS

• Wiston Jeune (looking like
a boss with a capital “B” by the
way) had the full house laughing
out loud during his acceptance
speech – a fine young
man whom I have written about
in the past – from Malden High
School Class of 2006 also.
• The Moose Hall was full!
“SRO” with possibly 250 Malden
High School athletic supporters
(no wisecracks!) cheering
on baseball legend Helen
Nordquist from the Class of 1950
all the way to Marcello Prada-Silva
from the Class of 2007. Many
of those making a ruckus were
Willcoxes, Fitzpatricks and Nolans
filling table after table in
support of the Cuddles Fan Club.
• Golden Tornado President
Steve Freker gave props to former
President Dom Fermano
(in attendance with his trusty
sidekick Diego Barricelli) with
a well-deserved homage as he
noted that the club “really took
off” when Dom took control
those many years ago.
• Many athletes and classmates
from the Class of ’72 were
there in support of one of their
own, Johnny Willcox. They (seriously)
all looked great still very
much active playing golf together
a couple times a year to
keep in touch. Tommy Restuccia
wasn’t there; seems he couldn’t
be located – but fear not – I gave
his contact info to Peter Mayne,
so Tommy, expect a call soon!
• Great to see my pal Mike
Byrnes at the banquet. For a
big guy he was smooth on the
hoop court! And smooth in real
life also!
• Mayor Christenson was (of
course) in attendance sitting
front and center enjoying every
moment of the event. Really
enjoying it! Not feigning interest
as many pols do as they go
through the motions at these
sorts of events. As he finished
up his (brief) comments he remarked
that he “didn’t want to
be ‘recalled’ so he was ‘indeed
going to be brief.’” “Only thing

E
ast Boston Savings Bank
has donated $5,000 to
support the City of Malden’s
affordable housing strategies.
The funds will help cover analysis
the City needs to craft an
inclusionary zoning policy. Inclusionary
zoning is considered
a best practice for municipalities
concerned about affordability
and the housing crisis,
and has been a policy priority
for Mayor Gary Christenson.
The analysis will give Malden
leaders the data they need to
develop a policy that produces
the greatest share of affordable
homes and helps meet the
needs of all Malden residents.
“This generous contribution
brings us closer to passing an
inclusionary zoning ordinance
and making Malden a more affordable
city for all of our residents,”
said Mayor Gary Christenson.
“I’m proud that we have
a partner like East Boston Savings
Bank to help us preserve
our community and move Malden
forward.”
“Once I heard more about
what Mayor Christenson was
looking to accomplish by creating
an inclusionary zoning policy
the Bank was all for it. The
results of the analysis will help
create the new policy supporting
the City’s affordable housing
strategies and protect the
City’s diverse community as well
as provide affordable housings
to its residents,” said Richard J.
Gavegnano, President and CEO
of East Boston Savings Bank.
Inclusionary zoning policies
leverage private sector development
by requiring residential
developments to build a
certain percentage of deed-restricted
affordable homes. Policies
vary by community, and
are most successful when they
consider that community’s
real estate market, zoning restrictions,
affordable housing
needs, development costs, and
other factors. If a policy sets the
affordability requirements too
high or too low, the community
could lose out on the number
of affordable homes that
would be built. To avoid this
problem, the Mayor proposed
commissioning an analysis to
help inform Malden policymakers.
The City Council unanimously
adopted a resolution
supporting the effort.
The Malden Redevelopment
Authority (MRA) has been working
closely with the Mayor’s office
on affordable housing strategies,
including inclusionary
zoning. Having worked with
East Boston Savings Bank on
several public initiatives before,
the MRA approached the
bank about inclusionary zoning
analysis late last year. The Bank
quickly agreed to support the
effort with their contribution.
“This donation continues
East Boston Savings Bank’s
long-standing commitment to
the Malden community,” said
MRA Executive Director Deborah
Burke. “We are grateful to
have such engaged community
partners, and look forward
to the results of our efforts: a
research-driven inclusionary
zoning policy that protects
our diverse community and
provides affordable homes for
Malden residents.”
In addition to inclusionary
zoning, the Mayor and MRA
have pushed for an Affordable
Housing Trust Fund and a Security
Deposit Pilot Program.
The City Council recently adopted
the Affordable Housing
Trust Fund ordinance, and
the Security Deposit Pilot Program
has been under review
by the Community Preservation
Commission (CPC) since
being submitted by community
partner Action for Boston
Community Development
(ABCD) in September.

Cherilus (21 points) leads Malden High girls
basketball team past Madison Park
By Steve Freker
I
t was a big night for Nevaeh
Cherilus and the Malden
High School girls basketball
team on Friday as head coach
Scott Marino’s Golden Tornadoes
squad topped Madison
Park, 52-48.
Cherilus, a senior forward,
poured in a career single-game
high of 21 points to lead the
Malden scoresheet, including
eight points in the fourth quarter
to keep the home team
ahead as Madison Park was trying
to come back. Sophomore
guard Yasmine Alayan added 12
points for Malden, senior Meley
Ephrem scored seven points
and Sandy Hernandez scored
five points.
Cherilus led the way with
seven first-quarter points to
get Malden off to a 13-9 lead
after the first period. Alayan
scored eight points in the second
quarter to help stake the
Golden Tornadoes to a 29-17
lead at halftime. Malden went
ahead, 38-24, after three quarters,
but Madison Park heated
up in the fourth quarter, led by
Tanika Coleman, who scored 14
of her game-high 23 points in
that period.
“I thought we let up a bit in
the fourth quarter, which we
can’t afford to do,” Coach Scott
Marino said. “We have a tough
stretch ahead of us in both our
GBL and non-league schedules
so we have to be ready to play
solidly for 32 minutes.”

School Committee
Members of the School Committee
voted to elect Leonard
Iovino, who represents Ward
nal conflicts involving council
records, government transparency,
personnel assessments
and an Open Meeting Law
complaint. She oversaw the
search and appointment of a
new city clerk, presided over
public hearings on the budget
and utilities, managed community
discussions on divisive
issues – such as Roosevelt Park
and retail marijuana licenses –
and kept close watch on the
needs and interests of her constituents
in Ward 8. The council
approved a major water system
project; road work moved
forward; and the city launched
several initiatives to meet the
need for affordable housing.
“Because of a leader like yourself,
we had a very successful
year,” Murphy told Sica.
4, to another two-year term as
Vice Chair of the committee.
Mayor Gary Christenson serves
as the committee’s Chair.
Iovino thanked Tara Beardsley,
Colleen Leon and Catherine
Bordonaro, who stepped
down from the committee
this year, and welcomed mew
members Adam Weldai, Joseph
Gray and Michelle Luong.
Iovino also gave a shout out to
State Senator Jason Lewis for
his work on the Student Opportunity
Act, which updates
the formula for distributing
state aid to local school districts.
The new law is designed
to provide more support to
districts with high numbers of
low-income students and English
language learners.
Iovino said the act will provide
millions and millions of
new dollars for the best of all
jobs, education. “That’s our
charge, our duty and my pleasure,”
he said.

(of course my dad jumped my
butt for being a smart aleck).
That said, about an hour after
the game I get a knock on my
door and it was Shawn. Came
to my house not to speak to
me about baseball or the loss
but to make sure I better never
be disrespectful to my folks.
No matter how competitive I
am, win or lose, they come first
he says. Class Act!!!” Thanks for
sharing, Paul.
