It matters where you donate By Karen Halfpop Digital/Production Director If you’re planning on giving blood during the month of May, good for you. According to a news release issued by Community Blood Center of the Ozarks, reserves of blood products are at a less-than-one-day level, prompting the center to issue a critical appeal for donors. To complicate matters, most of the organization’s mobile blood drives, scheduled for the month of May, have been cancelled or postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That adds up to more than 3,000 donations lost in a month. For the more than 40 area hospitals supplied with blood products and plasma solely by CBCO, the shortage could become a large problem. “During the month of April, Community Blood Center of the Ozarks has issued a critical appeal for blood donors. (Special to Branson Globe.) blood donors at our fixed site locations gave enough to get us through the first weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic,” CBCO Executive Director Anthony Roberts said in the CBCO release. “But hospital usage was down significantly during that time, and now we are really challenged as hospitals increase their blood needs. We are still experiencing multiple cancellations of previously scheduled drives this month and a critical shortage is looming.” To head off a critical shortage, CBCO “is actively seeking and scheduling emergency blood drives” in areas outside Springfield, and strongly encouraging eligible donors to make an appointment to give. However, CBCO finds itself competing for donors with an unlikely source: Red Cross. In an email obtained by Branson Globe, Roberts reached out to Lebanon city officials and the administrator at Mercy Lebanon, regarding blood drives scheduled in that community by the American Red Cross. In the email, Roberts states that the American Red Cross does not provide any of the blood products that are transfused in area hospitals. That includes Mercy Lebanon, Cox Medical Center Branson, Cox South and Cox North in the American Springfield, Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Citizens Memorial in Bolivar, and 38 more hospitals, and an Air Medical Transport service. In order to receive blood products from American Red Cross donors, a hospital must have a contract to obtain those products. While CBCO is working to schedule more blood donations to supply our area hospitals, the American Red Cross has three blood drives scheduled in the Tri-Lakes area over the next two weeks, according to their website. Roberts wants people to know that any unit of blood collected at these drives will not stay in the community. “Blood drives with any other organization other than CBCO put area patients at risk,” Roberts said. “Unfortunately, most donors do not know this is the case.” All blood types are needed, and eligible donors are strongly encouraged to donate. The petition, submitted on February 14, 2020, “substantially complies with the requirements of Section 67.1421 of the CID Act,” according to the signed and sealed document provided to the 76ECID. The original 76ECID was formed in May 2016 when property owners along West 76 from Presleys’ Theatre to the Branson Ferris Wheel, (Segment 3 or Phase 1A of the overall project) established the District and voted in support of a 1 percent sales tax to fund the revitalization and ongoing maintenance and operation of the District. Missouri State graduate gives millions to school, foundation SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — A graduate of Missouri State University plans to donate up to $12 million to be divided between the school and the Community Foundation of the Ozarks. The gift from the estate of Linda Hale will provide scholarships for Missouri State students from Barton and Vernon counties. The two organizations announced Monday they had each received the first part of the gift, about $2.25 million each. The organizations are expected to each receive about $6 million by the time the estate is settled. Linda Hale and her late husband, Larry, were graduates of Missouri State. The Hales were in real estate for over 40 years, and also farmed and raised cattle all of their lives. The gift to Missouri State will fund agriculture scholarships. Supporters of such programs argue they can help battle the opioid epidemic by alerting doctors of possible prescription drug misuse by patients. Primarily Republican critics for years have pushed back against prescription drug monitoring programs over concerns about patient privacy and disbelief that such a program will do much to help stop and prevent addiction. The measure passed the House on Wednesday with support from Democrats, who earlier this week deserted the bill after it was paired with an increase in criminal penalties for getting caught with the deadly opioid fentanyl. That provision has been stripped from the bill, which needs another vote of approval from the notoriously skeptical Senate. University of Missouri to pay $175,000 in open records case ST. LOUIS (AP) — The University of Missouri has agreed to pay $175,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by an animal rights group over a public records request. Four year ago, the Beagle Freedom Project sought public records pertaining to cats and dogs used for research at the university. University officials tried to charge the group $82,222 to fulfill the request. The Beagle Freedom Project sued, arguing the university’s charge was so high it essentially prevented the release of the records. The California-based nonprofit won in court in November, when Boone County Judge Jeff Harris ruled the university had knowingly violated the Sunshine Law. MoDOT is currently striping two-lane roadways and will be working on freeways and expressways in June, July and August. Drivers will see slow-moving caravans of trucks refreshing the lines on the roadway. “Safety is critically important to us – both the safety of our workers and the safety of motorists on Missouri highways,” said State Highway Safety and Traffic Engineer Nicole Hood. “Our striping crews are traveling at really slow speeds so please don’t drive distracted and pay attention. Buckle Up Phone Down.” Striping crews must travel slowly as they paint roadway markings to ensure a good quality line. The striping trains move between 8 and 12 mph when workers are painting white and yellow lines on the highways. The trucks have flashing lights, boards with flashing arrows and signs that say, “SLOW VEHICLES” and “WET PAINT.” Crisp, easy-to-see striping is a significant safety feature on roadways. MoDOT uses paint embedded with glass beads. The beads reflect headlight beams back in the direction of the motorist to make the stripes more visible, especially at night, wet road or low light conditions. Most of the striping is done during daylight hours. However, it is not uncommon to see crews working at night on interstate highways and other high-volume divided highways. Rain or very damp conditions will cancel or cut short any striping work that is scheduled. Safety Tips • Don’t drive distracted, wear your seat beat and put your cellphone down. Be patient if you come across MoDOT crews and give them the space to do their job safely. • Slow down as soon as you see the lights and signs and keep your distance until it is safe to go around the trucks. • On four-lane divided highways, pull around the striping train by merging carefully into the open lane, passing all the trucks in the train before moving back into the driving lane. • On two-lane highways, stay behind the last truck in the striping train. This vehicle is placed well behind the striping truck to give the new paint the few minutes it needs to dry. If traffic backs up behind the striping train, MoDOT crews will pull off the road where it is safe to do so to let congestion clear. • MoDOT uses water-based paint in all its highway operations. If you drive through wet paint, clean your car as quickly as possible with a high-powered water hose, such as those used in car washes. The 27-yearold wasn’t born when her dad won the first two of his six championships with the Chicago Bulls, so like many watching “The Last Dance,” there are some things she’s learning for the first time. “I’m definitely texting him nonstop. I think there hasn’t been an episode, a Sunday where I haven’t been like, ‘This happened—let me know your thoughts,’” says the youngest and only daughter of his three adult children with Juanita Vanoy. (Jordan has 6-year-old twin girls with current wife Yvette Prieto Jordan.) “I was super young, so I’m really taking this in as a fan.” The 10-part docuseries, airing on ESPN in the United States and on Netflix elsewhere, details the 1998 Bulls’ season, Jordan’s final year with the team and the organization’s last championship. While it focuses on the challenges and triumphs of Jordan’s illustrious basketball career, it also delves into personal tragedies, such as the murder of his father, and scandal, such as his public gambling habits. I think if you remove the basketball aspect and all the accolades he achieved for obvious reasons, I think I’m definitely learning that my dad was really trying to take in the pressures and the expectations and not allowing it to weigh on him and really manifesting it to his own. ...I’ve definitely been seeing him really take on that role and embracing that role and not running from it and really becoming the greatest player to ever play the game. (AP) — The manufacturer of Louisville Slugger bats says it put 171 furloughed employees back on the payroll after receiving a loan from a government program aimed at helping small businesses. Hillerich & Bradsby Co. resumed production at its wood bat factory in Louisville on Monday as parts of Kentucky’s economy reopened after weeks of shutdowns because of the coronavirus outbreak. The bat factory had been idled for nearly two months amid the global pandemic. The company did not disclose the amount of the loan it received under the Paycheck Protection Program. But it said the cash infusion was instrumental in restoring all 171 furloughed employees — or about 90% of its work force — to the payroll last week. “Ending furloughs and putting everyone back on payroll was made possible when H&B received funds from the PPP program,” Hillerich & Bradsby spokesman Rick Redman said in a statement Tuesday. Many of the furloughed employees have returned to work, including several dozen who work in the factory, Redman said. Others are being phased back into various operations, he said. Thirty-eight timber division employees in Pennsylvania also returned to work Monday, according to Redman. The Thousand Oaks-based facility said it would return to its original name of Sports Academy. It was founded in 2016. An officer lured the curious peacock that had escaped from Franklin Park Zoo into a fenced-in yard while playing a mating call on his cell phone, The Boston Globe reported. The officers on patrol in the Roxbury area were approached by a concerned citizen, who reported that the bird, named Snowbank, had escaped from the zoo, Boston police said in a statement. “Additional officers arrived at the scene and were met by an extremely large, slightly intimidating, and quite beautiful, male peacock,” police said. One of the officers began to look up a peacock mating call on his cellphone. When he played it, the 6-year-old bird was lured into the secure area and remained there until Boston Animal Control and zoo officials arrived. Snowbank was then returned to the zoo and is reported to be doing well, according to zoo officials.
