Candidates have spent I the past couple of months working tirelessly on their campaigns, in the hopes of winning over voters. So who and what should you be on the lookout for in the remaining weeks? For the mayoral race, In(Paid political advertisement) cumbent Mayor Brian Arrigo is facing off against certified candidate Daniel Rizzo. Arrigo has been mayor of Revere for the past four years, achieving many different things during his time in office, from the substance abuse disorder initiative to repairing the city streets. Certified candidate Daniel Rizzo has been a member of the Revere City Council since 2000, and served as the mayor of Revere until January 2016. During his one term as mayor he commissioned a review of the Revere Police Department and helped increase summer job opportunities for Revere students. There are currently 14 candidates who are running for Councillor-at-Large. The incumbents are certified candidates Jessica Giannino, Steven Morabito, George Rotondo and Anthony Zambuto. They will face off against challengers certified candidates Robert Capoccia, John Correggio, Richard Ireton, Dimple Rana, Wayne Rose, Philip Russo, Kevin Sanchez, Brian Vesce and Gerry Visconti. Fraternally yours, Charles Raso President Driver gets stuck on beach trying to retrieve boat By Tara Vocino A Jeep attempting to pull a boat out of the water reportedly ended up on Revere Beach Tuesday night. According to Massachusetts State Trooper James DeAngelis, no charges were filed and a tow truck removed the 2012 Jeep from the beach near 540 Revere Beach Blvd. at approximately 8:15 p.m. The driver, whose name wasn’t released, was issued a verbal warning. Mechanical failure was likely to blame, according to DeAngelis. The Jeep was on the sand, but its proximity to the water was unclear. “It’s not permitted to remove boats on and off the beach using cars,” DeAngelis said. “But we decided that enforcement wasn’t the best course of action.” State Police were on the scene for a little more than a half hour and the boulevard was temporarily closed. I am running because I believe my community involvement from childhood to the present day, coupled with my professional experience advocating for the people of Revere in the office of our State Representative for over five years, has provided me with the necessary tools to impact a positive and meaningful difference in Ward 6. It was during the internship, too, that I learned about the state budget process and how important programs like CAPIC’s Emergency Services Program and State Police Directed Patrols on Revere Beach are to our city. In those years, I also began to understand the important role elected officials play in delivering constituent services to the people they represent. Be it something as mundane as trimming brush on state property abutting Route 1 to something as dire as helping an elderly constituent who does not have any food in their refrigerator, I learned how to help Revere residents navigate the vast web of local and state government, and lead them to organizations who are able to help vulnerable populations. Upon graduation from Saint Anselm College, I chose to enter a career in public service because I not only wanted to continue helping people, but I wanted to help the people of my city and play a small role in the future direction of Revere. John Petrillo was a commercial truck driver and had an influence in several addicts’ lives as an active member of Narcotics Anonymous. Recovering addicts told Simone that if it wasn’t for him, they’d still be struggling – or dead. Joseph Puzzo, a chef, passed away in 2003 when he was in his late 30s. “He was clean two years and doing good,” his brother, Thomas Puzzo of Malden, said. “All it took was one time.” With a heavy heart, Mayor Brian Arrigo said so many people he knew growing up have been taken by overdoses – and he’s only 39. He went on to say that approximately 50,000 people under the age of 50 have passed away in the last year from overdoses. The challengers are certified candidates Carol Tye, Anthony D’Ambrosio, John Kingston, Arthur Terminiello, Jr., and Michael Toto, Jr. Members of the Revere community are encouraged to go out and cast their ballot in this election, which, according to Election Commissioner Diane Colella, has not always been the case in the past. “Revere people historically don’t vote in the September elections whether that’s preliminary or primary,” she said. “In 2017 the local election was cancelled, and in 2015 there was a Mayoral and Councillor-at-Large race and only 22.43 percent of voters turned out.” When asked about her projections for this election, Colella said, “I don’t think we’re going to see 22 percent. I think we are going to see either 18 or 20 percent.” It’s a mystery why voters in Revere do not turn up at the polls on Election Day, but Colella has some theories. “For every election it varies depending on the population. Each election has their own certain population in the city of Revere that will go and vote for that,” she said. “In the presidential election every single person will vote. However, in the local election only 5,000 people will vote. Some people don’t like to declare a party, whether that be Republican, Democrat or Independent, and that’s a contributing factor.” The polls open at 7 a.m. on Sept. 10 for the preliminary election and on Nov. 5 for the general election. Many legislators say that legislative sessions are only one aspect of the Legislature’s job and that a lot of important work is done outside of the House and Senate chambers. They note that their jobs also involve committee work, research, constituent work and other matters that are important to their districts. Critics say that the Legislature does not meet regularly or long enough to debate and vote in public view on the thousands of pieces of legislation that have been filed. They note that the infrequency and brief length of sessions are misguided and lead to irresponsible late-night sessions and a mad rush to act on dozens of bills in the days immediately preceding the end of an annual session. My wife and I are both in our late fifties and would like to get some professional advisement to help us better prepare for our retirement years. Seeking Advice Dear Seeking, With all the different financial planners, advisers and services available today, finding and choosing a trusted professional that can help you meet your financial goals can be confusing. Here are a few suggestions to consider. Where to Look A good place to start your search is by asking friends or relatives for recommendations. If you don’t know anyone who can give you a referral, and you’re looking for broad-based financial advice, hire a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) who are considered the “gold standard” in the industry. CFPs must act as fiduciaries, putting their client’ best interest above their own. To get the CFP credential, they must have a college degree and be educated in a wide range of personal finance subjects, pass a rigorous certification exam, have three years professional experience, meet continuing-education requirements and abide by a code of ethics. CFPs are taught to look at the big picture view of your finances, talking you through your goals, as well as advising you on the details of your financial life. You’re also probably better off hiring a CFP that’s a fee-only planner, verses one who earns a commission by selling you financial products. Fee-only planners charge only for their services – for example you might pay $150 to $350 an hour for a financial tune-up, a flat fee per project or an asset-based fee. To find a fee-only planner in your area, use the National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA.org), which carefully vets all members and offers an online directory. Or see the Garrett Planning Network (GarrettPlanningNetwork.com), a network of fee-only advisers. Or the Alliance of Comprehensive Planners (ACplanners.org), a community of fee-only advisors that charge annual retainers. If your needs are more specific, some other financial professionals to consider are a Registered Investment Adviser (RIA) who is registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission or a state securities regulator to manage investment portfolios; a Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC), who specialize in insurance and estate planning; and a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), who can help with tax planning. Be leery of many other financial advising titles, designations and certifications that are out there like the Certified Financial Consultant (CFC) or the Wealth Management Specialist (WMS). Many of these require no more than a few courses at a seminar or online, which means they’re not worth much. To research the different certifications or designations visit FINRA.org/investors - click on “Tools & Calculators,” then on “Professional Designations.” How to Choose After you find a few candidates in your area, call them up and schedule an appointment to meet and interview them. Find out about their experience, expertise and the types of services they provide; if they’re a fiduciary; how they charge and how much; what is their investment philosophy; and how will they handle your ongoing questions or financial needs. Look for someone whose clients are in situations similar to yours and who’s available as often as you need them. It’s also wise to do a background check on your potential advisor. At LetsMakeaPlan.org, you can verify a planner’s certification as CFP (click on “Verify CFP Professional Status”). You’ll also see any information on the planner’s disciplinary history with CFP Board and on bankruptcy filings in the past 10 years. To vet a registered investment adviser, go to Investor.gov where you can search an individual’s name and click on “Detailed Report” to see information on qualifications, employment history, disciplinary actions, criminal convictions and more. To check out a broker, visit BrokerCheck.finra.org where you can search an individual or firm’s name to get details like years of experience, licensing, exams passed and regulatory actions. The Patriots are coming off a 2018 season in which they finished with 13 wins and lost a close 1-0 decision to an always tough Somerville team in the opening round of the playoffs. Revere lost three times to Somerville last year, including the postseason defeat. Before Tuesday’s contest, Patriots head coach Manny Lopes said he sees this year’s squad as one of the better units he has coached. “We have a combination of senior and younger talent and a lot of team cohesiveness,” he observed. “We have a lot of skill from top to bottom.” Revere will be members of the Greater Boston League this season after having played in the Northeastern Conference in recent years. Lopes said his team should be able to face up to whatever challenge presents itself. Advancing in the tournament is also a goal for head coach Lianne O’Hara Mimmo and her squad. The Lady Patriots were defeated by Arlington in the Division I first round, but the coach thinks her unit has the potential to build on last year’s effort. “We’re hoping to win about 15 [matches] although we’re very different player-wise this season,” O’Hara Mimmo pointed out. “We’re trying to find players to fill some [vacated] roles.” One key loss from last season was the departure of setter Greis Kasofo, who will be hard to replace. Two other players will miss the season due to injury. Revere is bolstered by captains Lynzie Anderson, a junior, and Olivia Winsor and Brianna Popp. “Lynzie has tons of potential and all three have solid leadership abilities,” O’Hara Mimmo observed. “Olivia will serve as our middle hitter and Brianna will be an outside hitter.” O’Hara Mimmo said she is attempting to start a boys program at the school. Boys’ volleyball competes in the spring. However, two boys will members of this year’s team and the coach is looking for one of them to take over the setter position. A Zach Aresty double had already brought in a run as Revere trailed the Townies 4-2 entering the frame. It was Revere’s first-ever championship and second straight appearance in the league finals. In 2018, the Rockies were edged in seven games by the Brighton Braves, who had lost to Somerville in seven the year before. Kevin Sinatra hurled a complete-game 4-2 victory in game four last Tuesday to bring the Rockies to the brink of the title with a 3-1 series lead.
