Welcome to Eccles Rugby Football Club
A warm welcome to all the teams playing at Eccles RFC this weekend,
it seems a long time since we have seen a proper match. This is
officially our 124th anniversary and although weâ€™ve only played here
at Gorton Street for the last 74 years weâ€™ve always had our home in
this community.
One of the great things about our club is our inclusivity; teams for
Miniâ€™s, Juniors, Girls, Colts, Ladies and Men means you can come
down to the club Saturday or Sunday and be entertained. At Eccles
RFC we place great importance on developing youth and Iâ€™m particularly
looking forward to seeing some of our talented Home-Grown
colts stepping up to play in the seniors this coming year alongside our
new recruits.
It has been a strange year with everything that has been going on but
the club has still been extremely busy. The money we raised through
Crowdfunder, Â£40K+, has put us in an exciting position to commence
several ground improvement projects, that we hope will be complete
by Christmas.
The club would also like to thank all the volunteers for their dedicated
effort. Weâ€™d not be able to operate without their contributions. I canâ€™t
name all them all as I am limited to one page, but you all know who
you are. The club would also like to thank their sponsors as the financial
support you contribute greatly helps with maintaining our facilities
and activities. We can offer something for everyone including
â€˜Walking Rugbyâ€™ on Monday nights at 7pm which, for those whoâ€™d like
to give it a try, has no age, gender, or ability limitations.

A warm welcome to all our supporters and visitors at Eccles RFC today. Weâ€™re already a
month into the new season with three fixtures under the belt for all three of our Senior
teams and with our Ladies, Colts, Junior and Minis teams also enjoying competitive
games each weekend, the long suspension of rugby during the Covid lockdown is beginning
to feel like a distant memory.
Our 1XV men started their campaign in a positive fashion with an away win at Ormskirk,
but since then have struggled to score tries and secure victories against West Park St
Helens and Widnes. Theyâ€™ll be looking for an improved performance today against Wigan
who arrive at Gorton Street in similar form to Eccles with 1 win and 2 losses from their
opening fixtures in the ADM Premier Division.
Our 2XV meanwhile have a well earned day off today, having achieved back to back
confident victories over Manchester 2s and Warrington 2s and our newly invigorated 3XV
also enjoyed a home win last weekend over Aspull so I hope to see many of them down
at the club today â€˜encouragingâ€™ their team mates from the touchline and balcony today.
Our ability to field three teams at all in the current playing climate is something we should
celebrate and is due in no small part to the enormous weekly personal effort that goes
on, off the field and behind the scenes, from our Director of Rugby, Club Captain, Fixture
Secretary, Fossills ground crew and numerous Committee Members to get teams assembled,
games organised, referees arranged, pitches and changing facilities ready so
players can enjoy rugby.
The disruption of the coronavirus pandemic has certainly hit community rugby hard with
many players failing to return to their clubs or renew their previous commitment. Following
the news of a collapse at Broughton it was announced this week that Burnley too
have dropped out of the league due to a lack of players. My conversations with other
local club officials leads me to believe that Eccles are not the only club missing many of
our experienced names from team sheets and facing a weekly wrestle to raise teams.
We have to accept that players no longer wish to or are able to play every Saturday and
inconsistent availability on a weekly basis will result in inconsistent team line ups and
results. A positive outcome of this situation for Eccles has meant a very youthful 1XV with
many of our homegrown former colts stepping up for their first taste of first team rugby
in a Navy and White hooped shirt and itâ€™s an exciting time for us as we look to the fruits
of our own well established mini & junior section to become our future home-grown
talent. Age grade rugby at numerous North West clubs appears to be struggling, but the
effort we invested here at Eccles during the lockdown to keep players active and engaged
is paying off with increasing numbers of new recruits being reported every Sunday from
many of our teams and our U16s and Colts teams playing exciting attacking wining rugby.
As always, non of this would be possible without the continued effort and dedicated
commitment of a very small group of over burdened volunteers. Donating your time to
support the club's growth can be very rewarding so if youâ€™d like to get involved and put
something back in please do step forward.

Hello and welcome to Gorton Street on this fine Saturday
afternoon!
Today Eccles RFCâ€™s men welcome Wigan RUFC in a 10th v 9th position
ADM Premier Division clash. The Eccles playing squad has
started the season tested to the absolute maximum with a huge
injury list not being helped by constant turning tables in player
selection forced by player availability being massively sporadic.
This said Eccles have still played some extremely attractive rugby in
all competitive fixtures so far in the 2021/22 season, however a
consistent performance has for some reason alluded every group
which has graced the first team field so far this season, which has
left the team with 1 win from 3 outings.
Wigan, coached by former Scottish International Hooker Martin
Scott, sit above Eccles in 9th place but Iâ€™m sure they themselves will
not be happy with that or the heavy losses in the 1st & 3rd rounds
to Didsbury Toc H & Aldwinians RUFC, so today seems like a great
opportunity for both clubs to look at getting things right, where they
previously havenâ€™t, which should make for a fantastic spectacle for
the die hard supporters and may make for some edgy watching!
Personally, Iâ€™m really looking forward to seeing my old Gaffer Scottie
& welcoming him to my childhood club, Martin Scott was my
Forwards Coach at Fylde when I first started my competitive senior
career and he was one of a few which left an everlasting impression
on me as a player and Iâ€™m sure as a coach. Iâ€™ll see you at the bar

The mighty Minis & Juniors returned on Sunday morning in the glorious
sunshine at Gorton Street. Building on the successes of the 20/21 season, our
Mini managers and coaches welcomed 40 little people onto our awesome
AstroTurf facilities and much fun was had! This included 13 brand new members
to the club, forming our new under 5s team and next crop of talent.
The U7s and 8s boasted 37 players in week 1 and an extended coaching team
this season. Welcome to Sam and Lloyd who were introduced to old favourites
'Chasing Tails' and 'Rolling Rocks! They then dived straight into game-based play
and competed across 4 pitches as we prepare Gorton Street to become the
fortress of tag rugby once again.
The U9s, 10s and 11s boasted some eager new members and set about
re-learning to tackle. The 'Tower of Power' settled the boys back into some old
habits and tackle techniques. Welcome to coach Judo John here. Many new
members left munching hot dogs and boasting 'Trainer of the Week' medals
glinting in the midday sun.
Building on their Summer training camp, our 12s and 13s boys and girls were
practicing the principles of game-based play whilst enjoying a tackling skills
zone around wrapping the arms and chopping in the tackle. Our U14s boys are
looking dangerous after working on some technicalities of the scrum and mirroring
some of the 1st team backs move - watch this space!
Finally, our U16s notched up an impressive 24-5 pre-season win against Heaton
Moor under our Friday night lights! A big statement at the beginning of a big
season for them.

At last! A return to Rugby!
After our covid â€˜year offâ€™ the U18s were delighted to finally get a chance
to play competitive Colts Rugby.
The season this year is split into 2 parts, an initial 5 match Prelim
League, followed by a 10 match home & away conference. Clubs will be
seeded into conferences based on their Preliminary league performance.
We also have county and league cup competitions to look
forward to.
We started well with a great home win against a strong Sale team and
came back to snatch a late win against Rossendale with 3 tries in the
last 9 minutes. The only blot on our record so far was an away defeat at
Kirkby Lonsdale where we were only 13 against a squad of 22. But at
least the lads got the full Rugby Travel Experience â€“ the less said about
the coach trip back the betterâ€¦.
We also started our Lancashire Cup campaign with a 19 - 57 away win at
Fleetwood. Next round will be a home fixture against Littleborough in a
monthâ€™s time which Iâ€™m sure will be a far tougher test.
However, the season has been overshadowed by the tragic loss of Gail
Russell, mother to our stalwart prop, Harvey. Gail was a fixture on the
Eccles touchline, normally with her husband Craig and Harveyâ€™s twin
brothers, Daniel & Robert. Gail was always keen to help the team and
nothing was too much trouble. We never wanted for half time oranges
with Gail and she was always first to volunteer for any task. Gail sadly
passed away on the 9th of September.

Eccles Ladies travelled to Manchester FC to open their 2021/22 campaign,
a famously physical side with a lot of experience would prove a
real challenge for this young growing side.
Eccles could call upon a squad of 21 competitive standard players a
huge achievement in this current climate and a win before KO in my opinion.
The
game would stretch out and prove a step too far this time but the
score was by no means a true reflection of the performance. Eccles we're
dogged defensively and showed glimmers of attacking brilliance
throughout.
A huge step in the right direction and something that this group can
really use as a foundation to grow.
Outstanding and selfless performances from Molly Young, Leah Christian,
Sarah Williams and Vik Kini showed once again what it means to be
an Eccles Lady. The characteristics of our past successes are starting to
develop again; a rock solid set piece, furious defensive desire and true
desire to go to war with our teammates.
It is only a matter of time before this group starts to get the results it
deserves. We would love to see you down at the club next Sunday to see
how far we have come.

Numbers attending Walking rugby at Eccles are slightly down in the past
few weeks due to self-isolating and some very poor weather. We do
however have four new members to the group - a mum of a Junior player,
two former senior players and a new recruit who heard about us from a
friend.
Eccles RFC were one of the first clubs in the region to embrace Walking
Rugby and our group remain the largest to date. We are now approaching
our 2nd year and until the Covid lockdown in March our activities had
been continual.
We recommenced Walking Rugby activities on the 7th of September and
had 19 participants at the first session. This response is a good reflection
of our group of guys and gals who have a strong bond, turn up regularly,
and play enthusiastically every Monday evening at 7.00pm, on the 3G
pitch, regardless of the weather conditions.
Our challenge in the months ahead will be to re-instate the momentum
we had gained and get our Walking back up to speed! The game itself
encompasses a touch tackle rule so weâ€™re within the RFU guidelines, and
weâ€™re also coming to terms with the necessary technology to make registration
and playing possible ( we also keep a paper record of participants
for those who are not smart phone savvy) We keep in touch through our
own What's-app group and new players from within the club are always
welcome so why not give it a try!

award programme to its players.
The scheme was established in
honour of Christopher Tickle who

DofE Gold Award by HRH Prince
Phillip in 2010. Since 2011, the
clubâ€™s young people have achieved
over 100 Bronze awards, over 60
Silver awards and 48 prestigious
Gold Awards â€“ a testament to the
hard work and dedication of the
participants and the Eccles team
of volunteer leaders.
The DofE programme is a journey
of adventure and discovery that
compliments the ethos of Rugby
by rewarding teamwork, endeavour,
physical activity, learning
skills and community volunteering.
To achieve an award a young
person must show persistence,
commitment, progress and
personal development
over
a
period of time. Every activity must
be successfully completed and
assessed. Activities take a minimum
of one hour a week over a
set period of time, so they can be
fitted in around academic study,
hobbies and social lives.
To commence a Bronze Award you
must be aged 14+ years, 15+
years for Silver and 16+ years to

Eccles RFC 1XV 1924
Eccles Rugby Football Club was re-established 124 years ago in
1897 (following the great Northern Union rugby schism of 1895) in
1897 and has now worn its iconic Blue and White hooped shirt for
100 years. The hoops were first adopted in the aftermath of WWI,
when the club had to rebuild with many of its new recruits running
out to play at Stott Lane with injuries suffered in the trenches. In
its early days before the First World War, Eccles RFC had played in
green shirts and we believe this switch in colours was a tribute to
fallen comrades in the Salford Pals Battalions. Overcoming adversity
and recovering from enforced breaks in activity have been a
feature of our clubâ€™s history. The pitch at Stott Lane suffered from
drainage issues and for the early 1920s the club lead a nomadic
existence, playing at Alder Forest and then Barton Lane with
changing facilites at the Kings Head Hotel, close to the swing
bridge. In 1925 the club moved once again to land owned by Mr
Farnworth at Bromyhurst Farm, Redclyffe Road, Davyhulme, on
the opposite bank of the ship canal, behind All Saints RC church
and facing Barton Power Station. Eccles quickly established themselves
in their new home and a second-hand hut was purchased
with 4 dressing rooms, a hot water bolier and a bath installed
within the season.

According to club records, it would appear that Eccles first played
Wigan Old Boys (as they were then known) on 27th February,1926.
The match report in the Eccles Journal shows the score, Eccles 3 v
Wigan O.B. 18 remarking the game was "played in driving rain
which was reflected in the attendance at Redclyffe Road". Amongst
the Eccles players mentioned for their good play were W. H. Butler
(Walter) and B. G. Butler (Benjamin) - and here they are sitting
cross-legged centre and far right with their brother, George, on the
left. Standing are the three Dixon brothers. Two sets of three brothers
playing in the 1920s.

Phil Hayes was playing in a Lancashire trial game at Old Bedians ground.
He had been Captain of the Eccles Colts team 1968/1969 and
1969/70. During the 1971/72 Season Eccles were fielding four Senior
teams and a Colts team. From the Journal, "Eccles are able to field five
teams each weekend with comparative ease. They got a morale boost on
Saturday when four teams returned handsome victories. The Colts team
was narrowly beaten by a strong Preston Grasshoppers side".

â€¢ Support the players. Shout â€˜forâ€™ them not â€˜atâ€™ them.
â€¢ Never verbally abuse players, coaches, match officials
or fellow spectators; such negative behaviour
affects the players and refereeâ€™s performance and
attitude.
â€¢ Remain behind the barriers. The field is for the
competitors.
Remember children play rugby for their own
enjoyment, not for that of the spectators.
