On Saturday, Chris and Don organised the inaugural '100 Years of Hoops’ Mens Rugby Tournament. With teams represented from the four quarters of our wonderful County. This included 13 brand new members to the club, forming our new under 5s team and next crop of talent. The U7s and 8s boasted 37 players in week 1 and an extended coaching team this season. Welcome to Sam and Lloyd who were introduced to old favourites 'Chasing Tails' and 'Rolling Rocks! They then dived straight into game-based play and competed across 4 pitches as we prepare Gorton Street to become the fortress of tag rugby once again. The U9s, 10s and 11s boasted some eager new members and set about re-learning to tackle. The 'Tower of Power' settled the boys back into some old habits and tackle techniques. Building on their Summer training camp, our 12s and 13s boys and girls were practicing the principles of game-based play whilst enjoying a tackling skills zone around wrapping the arms and chopping in the tackle. Our U14s boys are looking dangerous after working on some technicalities of the scrum and mirroring some of the 1st team backs move - watch this space! Struggling for numbers, full credit must go to the hosts who loaned players to Eccles so a meaningful game could take place. Eccles started well and showed great organisation and resilience in the face of some constant early pressure. Although Glossop scored early in the first quarter the match stayed at 7-0 for the majority of the first half, which finished with a fantastic solo effort from Matthew Reed 7-5. In the second half Glossop & Marple took the upper hand and scored four unanswered tries but the score in no way reflected the fantastic effort Eccles continued to put in. Which culminated in two ventures into the oppositions red zone which were brilliantly defended from two definite tries for Akeal Stewart. In the final quarter of the game Eccles finally got their just deserts with an amazing try from Finley Whitworth who had constantly broken the defence of a tiring Glossop and Marple. Eccles finished the stronger side with some huge tackles being put in right up to the final whistle; Tom Kemp certainly left his mark but unfortunately the final score was 36-10 in favour of Glossop and Marple. There were certainly some great signs of quality rugby which certainly inspires confidence of a successful season ahead. Senior Colts Eccles showed their attacking intent from the whistle and opened the scoring 6 mins in with a try from Henry Dutton and appeared to be in control of the game until they gifted a penalty in the middle of park, leading to a kick to the corner and the Sale forwards drive over to even the score. The remainder of the half continued to be played in Sale territory with Eccles failing to turn their possession and dominance into points. Eccles started the second half on fire, determined to cut out their own errors and increase the pressure on the Sale defence. Eccles played some great front foot rugby and attacked with agression. Tries from Louis and Duncan, converted by Will B pressed home the advantage. Fullback Henry was smashed in a tackle and left the field for treatment, Sale went on to score a try late in the game, but of no consequence to the result when Will B slotted a penalty to secure the W. Excting committed rugby and a well deserved victory for the senior colts who worked hard in the heat. Whilst we have been enjoying the Men’s 1XV prompt return to rugby, we have spent our weeks preparing hard for our preseason games. Though we can’t wait to adorn our much loved navy and white hoops, we’re utilising the extra sessions to further refine our craft, whilst introducing some newer players to the tricks of the trade. After a solid block of training and preparation, we were ready to take to the pitch on the 5th of September to play our much anticipated first preseason friendly. Unfortunately, our planned opposition were unable to field a full team, and despite trying to find an alternative fixture, there were no teams available with a full complement of players. Although this was inevitably a disappointment to the girls, we planned a training session in place of the fixture to further embed our playing process. The lengths to which our girls will go to make themselves available for the team is admirable. We had a strong group of 18 players ready to face the late Summer sun. As the colts took to the first team pitch, we worked alongside them building our routines and structured play, ready for next weekend's away fixture. Individuals such as Sarah Williams and the Whailing girls girls had notable performances and are continually demonstrating their progress at training. Old friends Mavis Tam and Eto Ding have returned from Hong Kong, and showed a masterclass in tackle technique and defensive strategy. The session concluded on high spirits as we settled in to watch the colts secure victory over a well drilled Sale outfit. As a playing group, we have rallied from this anticlimax with a heightened sense of confidence; confidence in our ability to produce a full squad of high ability players, with the desire to commit and compete out on a Sunday. We do however have four new members to the group - a mum of a Junior player, two former senior players and a new recruit who heard about us from a friend. Eccles RFC were one of the first clubs in the region to embrace Walking Rugby and our group remain the largest to date. We are now approaching our 2nd year and until the Covid lockdown in March our activities had been continual. We recommenced Walking Rugby activities on the 7th of September and had 19 participants at the first session. This response is a good reflection of our group of guys and gals who have a strong bond, turn up regularly, and play enthusiastically every Monday evening at 7.00pm, on the 3G pitch, regardless of the weather conditions. Our challenge in the months ahead will be to re-instate the momentum we had gained and get our Walking back up to speed! The hoops were first adopted in the aftermath of WWI, when the club had to rebuild with many of its new recruits running out to play at Stott Lane with injuries suffered in the trenches. In its early days before the war, Eccles RFC had played in green shirts and we believe this switch in colours was a tribute to fallen comrades in the Salford Pals Battalions. Overcoming adversity, recovering from set backs and enforced breaks in activity have been a feature of our club’s history. The commencement of WW2 in September 1939, meant that the 1939-1940 season as scheduled never got under way. Eccles played a few away games against local teams as our home ground and pavilion at Redclyffe Road, Barton, were taken over by 356 AA Company (later known as 356 Searchlight Battery R.A.) for defence against Luftwaffe bombing. As players were called up to the services it became obvious that rugby would have to be abandoned. The war in Europe came to an end on 8th May, 1945 and, eight months later, on 25th January, 1946, an article appeared in the Eccles Journal stating, "Eccles R.F.C., whose activities discontinued at the outbreak of war with Germany, is to be revived.
