candidates used some familiar
talking points for this particular
election, with Markey calling
Deaton a future rubber
stamp for President Donald
Trump’s legislative agenda if
elected and Deaton questioning
whether Markey would be
able to serve out his full sixyear
term if he is victorious.
Markey, who turned 80 on
the campaign trail this past
summer, was strongly challenged
on his age by his former
Democratic challenger,
U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton,
who made it a focal issue of
his run. Markey would be 86
years old at the end of the sixyear
term he seeks on Nov. 3.
Voters apparently did not buy
Moulton’s argument on age in
September, as the Malden native
crushed Moulton, 65%35%,
in the primary, advancing
to face Deaton in the November
election.
Markey went right for the

“I’m the one that is debating
you, not Donald Trump,” Deaton
said at Tuesday’s debate,
hosted by WBZ-TV, after one of
Markey’s statements attempting
to link Deaton to the President.
“You know I never voted
for President Trump.”
Deaton dismissed Markey’s
nearly 50-year record in Washington
and questioned whether
he would be able to serve
another six years in offi ce. Markey,
in the campaign against
Moulton, continually brushed
aside references to his age and
longevity, saying he has more
energy and motivation now
than even at other points in
his life.

one of his fi rst statements
at Tuesday’s debate, Markey
made the Deaton-Trump connection
reference. “He [Deaton]
is going to Washington
to be a blank check for Donald
Trump. He’ll continue the
majority for the Republicans,”
Markey asserted.
Throughout the debate Deaton,
an attorney and former
U.S. Marine, 59, continued to
disavow the party label and
pushed back that he had his
own brand of political motivation.
“The Democrats are going
to win the House, and the
Democrats are going to win
the Senate,” Deaton said. “You
have a chance to send a nonpartisan
person like me, who
will really put America fi rst and
decide, ‘Is it good for Massachusetts

it is, I’ll support it.”
“He’s trying to pretend that
he’s an independent and that

also identify appropriate traffi

“We continue to see serious
accidents in and around Carey

a person was ejected this past
weekend, really emphasizes
this urgency. I have raised
concerns about this bend before,

time. That’s an oxymoron,” said
Markey.
“It’s like trying to be a carnivorous
vegetarian,” the Senator
quipped.
On Markey’s longevity, Deaton
predicted the Senator has
“run out of time to get his priorities
accomplished.”
“Senator Markey will be ignored.
He’ll be relegated to
the corner of the Senate with
his little slogans,” Deaton said.
“Even with his party in control,
he’s never going to be heard

Guarino-Sawaya said she is

Guarino-Sawaya

~ POLITICAL ANNOUNCEMENT ~
Sean M. Salazar Announces Candidacy
for the Northeast Metro Tech School Committee
M
y name is Sean M. Salazar,
and I currently represent
Malden on the Northeast Metropolitan
Regional Vocational
School Committee. Earlier this
year, I was appointed to fi ll Malden’s
vacant seat and am now
running for that position in the
November 3rd election.
I’m a Career and Vocational
Technical Education teacher
at Everett High School, where I
teach Hospitality Management
and Culinary Arts. Before becoming
an educator, I spent 20
years working in the hospitality
industry. I am also an active
member of the Everett Teachers
Association and Massachusetts
Teachers Association.
My professional background
has given me the opportunity
to experience Career and Technical
Education from two perspectives:
as someone who
spent years working in industry
and as a teacher preparing
students to enter it.
I believe Career and Technical
Education is about much
more than teaching a trade.
It’s about helping students discover
their interests, develop
technical and academic skills,
learn to communicate and
solve problems and gain the
confi dence to make informed
decisions about their futures.
Whether students pursue employment,
apprenticeships,
college or military service, our
responsibility is to make sure
they have meaningful opportunities
and are prepared for
whatever comes next.
Since joining the School
Committee, I’ve been particularly
involved in reviewing
our policies and considering
how they affect the people
who learn and work at Northeast.
I’ve pushed for the strongest
protections possible under
our Protect Act policy and
believe that work must continue
beyond adopting a policy.
We need to understand how it
aff ects students, families and
staff and ensure that everyone
responsible for implementing
it, including our School Resource
Officers, understands
and follows its requirements.
I’m also interested in bringing
student clubs and activities
into our conversations to better
understand what support
they need. That includes making
sure LGBTQIA+ students,
students of color and other
underrepresented members
of our school community have
opportunities to be heard.
I support Northeast’s continued
development toward a
polytechnic model and the opportunities
it can create for students
pursuing diff erent educational
and career pathways.
I also believe that building relationships
with fellow School
Committee members is essential
to identifying shared priorities
across all 12 communities.
Underlying all of this is my
commitment to transparency
and accountability. Families
and communities deserve to
understand the decisions being
made, the reasons behind
them and how those decisions
aff ect their students.
One aspect of this election
that may be unfamiliar to voters
is how Northeast’s regional
School Committee is elected.
Northeast serves 12 communities:
Chelsea, Malden, Melrose,
North Reading, Reading,
Revere, Saugus, Stoneham,

asked Firefi ghter DiCarlo
a variety of important
and entertaining questions
during his visit. He
also impressed upon
them to view first responders
as friendly, approachable
community

e-bikes, scooters,
power tools and toys;
safe charging habits, including
keeping devices
on hard, fl at surfaces
and unplugging them
when fully charged;

By Melissa Moore-Randall
R

is hoping to publish her
third novel, “Drive City,” and is
also writing her fourth book,
“The Girl on the Billboard,”
which focuses on the 1992
slaying of 27-year-old Boston

off the success of Dianne’s
other published books, “Silence

In addition to her literary
works, she is the cohost of the

according to Braley’s website.
It adds that Braley is an

who teams up with Keri Pomeroy,
a “nurse, mom, lunatic and

RHS Cheerleaders cheer on
Lighthouse Nursing Home event
L
ast week the Revere High
Cheerleaders attended
the Lighthouse Nursing
Home Homecoming Celebration.
The talented cheerleaders
mingled with residents,
laughed, did a few
classic RHS sideline cheers
and, most notably, crowned
the Lighthouse Nursing
Home Homecoming King
and Queen! It was lovely to
get the opportunity to volunteer
within the Revere
Community, and we are
looking forward to partnering
with Lighthouse to get
involved in future events.

according to the Trust. The
funding is part of $80.1 million
in grants and low-interest
loans approved statewide
to help communities improve
water infrastructure, protect
public health and strengthen
environmental resilience.
The Massachusetts Clean
Water Trust works with the
state Department of Environmental
Protection (MassDEP)
to provide financing to cities,
towns and water utilities
for projects involving drinking
water, wastewater and
stormwater systems. The funding
is distributed through the
Massachusetts State Revolving
Fund programs, which
are partnerships between the
U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency and the Commonwealth
that help communities
fi nance water infrastructure
improvements.
Revere’s approved funding
includes two separate planning
loans under the clean
water program and a grant
through the Sewer Overfl ow
and Stormwater Reuse Municipal
Grant program. The
Trust did not provide additional
details in its announcement
about the specifi c improvements
planned under
Revere’s projects.
POLITICAL ANNOUNCEMENT |

Wakefield, Winchester, Winthrop
and Woburn.
Although each School Committee
seat is designated for
a particular community, voters
throughout the regional
district participate in electing
those representatives.
This means the election for
Malden’s seat also appears on
ballots in the other member
communities.
While I represent Malden,
the work of the School Committee
affects students and
families throughout Northeast’s
district. Decisions involving
educational programs,
budgets, district policies
and student opportunities
carry responsibilities that
extend beyond any one community.
The
opening of Northeast’s
new school building marks an
important moment in the district’s
history. Its classrooms,
technical shops and shared
spaces provide new opportunities
for students to learn
and prepare for their futures.
I’m proud of my work as a
CTE educator and grateful for
the opportunity to serve on
the Northeast School Committee.
I look forward to continuing
conversations with
residents throughout the district
about the school’s future
and the opportunities available
to its students.
