Bob Bruhl - Board Chair
It doesn’t take much to remind us daily of the blessings
we share by living in paradise. The slogan is true.
However, the quid pro quo is the responsibility –
the kuleana – we also share because we live here.
Boiled down, we are supposed to leave things better
than we find them.
During my term as Chairman, I have had the good
fortune of watching this organization till its soil inch
by inch, plant seed after seed and yield blossom after
magnificent blossom as it completely retooled itself,
its team, its mission and its service to the community.
Topflight management and new staff have amped
their joy-creating machine to be not only better than
they found it, but also beyond what any of us on
the board could have envisioned only three short
years ago.
√ Double the number of wishes granted
to local children
√ Exceed over 1,000 families touched per year
√ Increase the number of full-time employees
meeting the daily needs of our keiki
√ Relocate to a new headquarter
√ Grow the volunteer base almost immeasurably
√ Build a board from five to now 19 individuals
who collectively touch nearly all parts of the
business and civic community
√ Inaugurate a newly formed Young Leaders
Board to extend that reach even further
√ Do all of this while annually posting record
revenues, bottom-line results and capitalization
But is this how we choose to measure ourselves in
terms of living up to that kuleana of leaving 2014
better than we entered it? No. Our measuring stick is
one child and every child. It is the child who makes a
wish while in a battle that she should not be facing in
the first place. She is another child who has blessed
us by allowing us in her life, and our hope-filled
mission is for it to have been bettered because she
did. By granting wishes directly to our local keiki
and by assisting in those visiting Hawaii as part of
their wish, we have the opportunity to do this over
1,000 times per year.
And our ability to deliver
on this kuleana is exclusively powered by you and
your support.
Lucky we live Hawaii. My sincerest thanks to you
for making us better than you found us.

mission moments”
Siana Hunt - CEO
It is both our greatest challenge and feat to grant
a child’s one true wish. While each wish is driven
by the child’s wondrous imagination, it is a
responsibility that grounds us – and one that we
take seriously. After 33 years of reaching more
than 11,000 children, we know that a wish marks
a profound turning point of triumph.
We also know that despite these years of
experience, each wish takes us back to Day One.
No two children are alike, and it is with open
minds, pure hearts and a grassroots approach
that we work to transform wishes into realities.
We operate one wish at a time, leaving us a trail
of beautiful moments that collectively comprise our
purpose for being and our roadmap for the future.
You can see this purpose in the face of 5-year-old
Honolulu Wish Kid Trishelle. It is in this moment of
her princess-inspired wish that you don’t see a child
battling lymphoma, you see a child overcome by joy.
You can see it in 8-year-old Dominique whose wish
to have a backyard raceway alleviates the stress
of chronic kidney failure. You can see it in 5-yearold
Matthew whose check-ups with his oncologist
have transformed into laughter because planning
his wish has given him hope. You can also see it in
16-year-old Annabelle whose glamourous glow at
her red carpet wish unveil replaced the heaviness
she fights of losing her eyesight to treatment.
As you browse this Annual Report, I encourage
you to look closely at the faces of these wish kids.
Their smiles are more beautiful than what meets
the eye; these smiles are helping them fight off
their illnesses. These smiles are really, really good
medicine. This is the power of a wish.
Thank you for supporting another successful
year. We’ve dreamed, we’ve grown and we’ve
added moments more beautiful than we could
have imagined.
Joy Set Free

are Good
Medicine
We can all relate to the power of positivity transforming the
way we think, and in turn how we feel. For wish children,
who don’t understand the “why me; why now?” It can be
all-consuming to cope with the seriousness of their medical
battles. When children receive their first dose of a wish,
given the day their wish granters ask them to dream,
our medicine begins to kick in and the power of positive
thinking transforms sick kids into warriors. Wishes turn
feelings of defeat to strength, moments of stress to joy, and
thoughts of uncertainty to hope.
Just ask the medical professionals.

Our 2nd Annual Jingle Rock Run was a great
success! The most festive, family-friendly 5K
of the holiday season brought more than
2,500 walkers, runners, and jingle
rockers
from all around the island to raise an
astounding $152,000!
Holiday revelers were dressed in their holiday
best – children, adults and even dogs wore
amazing Christmas outfits to help spread some
cheer, jingle and sparkle through the holiday
lights of Downtown Honolulu. But the Jingle Rock
Run wasn’t just about celebrating the fun and joy
of the season - we also honored those who are at
the heart of our mission – our courageous wish
kids and their families. These brave keiki came
out in force to support their Make-A-Wish Ohana,
signing baseball cards for racers, forming teams
of their own, and even running in the half mile
keiki sprint!
The Jingle Rock Run is a fun, easy way to bring our
ohana together to celebrate the holidays! We hope
it brought you closer to the children and families
we serve. Thank you to all who volunteered
and participated!

Swing for Wishes has become a marquee event for

marked the 7th Annual Swing for Wishes, organized
by our incredible partners at The Hyatt Regency
Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa.
Their team, under the direction of Hyatt Area
Resorts Vice President David Nadelman and Swing
for Wishes Chair Sheryl Siu, raised $100,000 for
Make-A-Wish®
Hawaii - helping to create moments of
triumph for our wish kids throughout Hawaii.
Proceeds were presented at the Annual Christmas
Tree Lighting Ceremony held at The Hyatt in
December, where wish kids past and present came
out to enjoy festivities and show their support. It was
a beautiful night of joy and holiday cheer as we
celebrated our valued partnership. Mahalo for your

׉	7cassandra://PTHYN09WJkaLLTMd8-H_TVi_thXlIpBoiZrvituqd3EL `V;7O|h׉E	Why we Give
Arnie and Joji Baptiste’s Charity of Choice
“The impact of having wishes granted is ubiquitous.
We see how the wish children are able to just be
kids, during a most stressful time in their lives. The
wish families are able to be present and be part of
a happy moment, away from all of the poking and
prodding. The hope, strength and joy are felt by
everyone,” said Arnie and Joji Baptiste, describing
why they continue to support our mission at Make-AWish
Hawaii.
To watch a child you love battle with their health
is a heart-wrenching ordeal. Arnie and Joji
Baptiste know exactly what it’s like to see a young
family member struggle with a life-threatening
medical condition. The couple’s now 13-year-old
goddaughter Skylar has not one, but three qualifying
medical conditions that made her eligible for a
wish. Her multiple diagnoses at age 11 meant a
hard road of treatments ahead, and a need to keep
her sensitive skin protected from Hawaii’s bright sun
at all times.
“When someone close to us aches, we feel it as
well,” said Arnie and Joji. The two lived in San
Francisco when Skylar was first diagnosed, but
they remained strong and supported Skylar from
afar. “Prior to our return to Hawaii from San
Francisco, Skylar had mentioned she would have to
go through chemotherapy as part of the treatment
protocol; thinning and subsequent loss of her hair
would be imminent. We returned to Honolulu with
hats in tow and saw how her face lit up.”
Skylar’s joy sparked a very unique wish – she wished
to give the gift of sun safety to her classmates. Most
kids might take the news of having to wear a hat
at all times with disappointment, but not Skylar. She
was excited to get creative and prove that you can
be fun and fashionable while also being sun safe.
“The impact of Skylar’s wish has far exceeded
that of any expectation [we had]. Skylar continues
to thrive and have perpetual hope, strength and joy.
When a child spends as much time in the hospital as
Skylar does, the silence in those hospital walls can
be deafening. When we visit Skylar either in or out
of the hospital, there is no dichotomy in her spirit. It
is and continues to be ever-positive, fueling her spirit
to keep on keepin’ on. And... that has a ripple effect
on everyone in Skylar’s life (us included).”

Waikiki Resort & Spa
Creating truly special and unique
experiences for wish families
The Sheraton Waikiki understands that many of the day-to-day moments that wish
kids experience happen inside the walls of hospitals, facing challenges even
adults wouldn’t want to face. The Sheraton team also understands that a trip to
Hawaii delivers a much needed reprieve for wish kids – a time to forget about their
treatments, needles and medications for a while.
“We want to make a direct impact on these families, even if it’s only for a few days,
because joy in a time of crisis is priceless,” said Kelly Sanders, General Manager
of the Sheraton Waikiki. “Our internal culture is all about driving experiences for
our guests. Creating something that is truly special and unique. [We] ensure that
every guest, especially wish families, truly walk away with an amazing experience
when they’re here in Hawaii."
To that end, they treat wish families as honored guests who receive exceptional care,
unmatched hospitality and an unforgettable experience to cherish forever. From
beautiful rooms and amenities to personalized gift bags and special welcomes, the
Sheraton Waikiki’s dedicated “Fun Team" goes above and beyond to ensure that
every moment is a memory to cherish.
Mahalo to our Sheraton Waikiki ohana for everything they do to create moments of
welcome and pure joy for our wish children!
“Treatment may steal her vision,
but Annabelle’s wish brings newfound joy to light.”
Ongoing treatment has led to Annabelle losing her vision. Her wish returned her focus to dreams of
acting. The red carpet send-off ended with a ticket aboard a Mediterranean Cruise, where wonders
of the world are forever photographed in her mind. Photo: (left) Kevin Lubera. Inset: Annabelle and
Kelly Sanders, General Manager of the Sheraton Waikiki. Photo: Mark Ramelb.

x͠%V;7O|h׉Ea moment of gratitude
From the depths of our hearts, thank you to our wish families. You fight unthinkable battles every day and still
come through with grace, patience and resilience. You are our heroes.
Thank you to our volunteers for your countless hours of time, to our local community for your infallible partnershi
and to our donors for your unwavering generosity. We would not be able to bring these beautiful moments into
the lives of the children we serve without your dedication and support.
“It was Happily Ever After!” ~ Addison
Addison, an imaginative six-year-old from Georgia, wished to be a princess starring in her very own fairytale at
Oahu’s Waimea Valley. Her face beamed with excitement as her dream to see a pink unicorn came true before her
eyes just as she had always imagined. This story closed the chapter of her battle against leukemia and turned the
page anew. Photo: Kevin Lubera.
