By Christine Wells, LA (LW) CDD Community Director
It's the most wonderful time of the year at Lake Ashton. Enjoy time with friends and family while
basking in the beautiful Florida sun this holiday season. The community entrance and Clubhouse are
decked out with lights and holiday décor to add to the festivity of the season. There are several
activities scheduled to celebrate the holidays with family and friends, such as the Christmas Dinner
Dance, Holidays Around the World, the Annual Holiday Parade and a New Year's Eve Masquerade Ball
in the Ballroom. Some of the most rewarding community holiday traditions involve volunteering and
giving to those in need. Think about donating to a local charity (there are several 501 c(3) charities in
Lake Ashton), dropping off a gift to the Caring Tree, volunteering your time at a local food bank, or
helping out a friend or neighbor in need. While it is the traditional season for celebrating, some in the
community are in emotional pain and struggling to get through the month. Grieving friends and
neighbors can use some extra care during the holidays. Those who have recently lost loved ones can
be helped by others being supportive and inclusive. Suggestions from hospice professionals: invite a
neighbor along to a community celebration, ask if they are interested in volunteering, offer to help
with decorating or baking, send a special holiday card, or be willing to listen. Lake Ashton is known for
being a caring community and there is no better time of year to care for thy neighbor.
The LACDD Board of Supervisors met on November 15 and approved the purchase of a new security
golf cart, the recovering of the Restaurant awning with a waterproof vinyl awning, and a one-time
vegetation clean-up of an area near hole number 5,
bordering Lake Ashton, on the East Golf Course. A
wrap up report was sent out on November 17 via email.
Residents that did not receive this information email
cwells@lakeashtoncdd.com to request a copy. The next
Board of Supervisors meeting will be on December 20
at 9:30 am in the Clubhouse Ballroom. Residents are
encouraged to attend. Meeting agendas and minutes
are posted on lakeashtoncdd.com.

Happy Holidays from the Board of Supervisors of LA II CDD, staff and volunteers! 2021 hasn’t been
without new challenges relating in some way to COVID for everyone. We missed our Canadian
residents for 11 out of the 12 months this year, but some are now back “home”.
Your LA II CDD Board of Supervisors has approved the replacement of the Fitness Room, Sports Court
and Racquetball Court floors, also the repairing and grading of the cart path near the driving range,
and the repair of specific areas along both lanes of Ashton Boulevard as well as on Pebble Beach
Boulevard. The HFC and Gate House will be painted, and 2 hand dryers will be added. These project
schedules will be sent out in eblasts to allow residents ample notification. The December Board
meeting was cancelled, with the next meeting scheduled for January 21, 2022.
Don’t forget The Holiday Party on December 3rd with the Rusty Trumpet Band at the HFC! Bring your
own snacks and beverages and start out the holiday celebrations! The double elimination Holiday
Classic Corn Hole Tournament will take place on Tuesday, December 7th. Bring your munchies or even
lunch and beverages and enjoy the day of corn hole whether you play or cheer on your favorite team!
The Activities Office will be closed on Friday, December 24th and Friday, December 31st because of
the holidays. Check your calendars, however, as private activities may be planned for those days. A
listing will be posted at the desk.
Please stay healthy and enjoy every minute of
the holiday season. Stop over to the HFC and
have some ice cream on Fridays.

ACTION COMMITTEE
By Shelley Miller
At a recent Monday Coffee Meeting, several
officials from Lake Wales briefed the LA residents
about the new residential development at Rt. 27
and Thompson Nursery Road. On October 26 an
informational meeting was held at the Clubhouse
to address the concerns of the residents of Lake
Ashton of the upcoming housing developments
and their impact on the community. This meeting
resulted in the formation of the LACAC to
advocate for changes to ensure the safety and
welfare of residents. A steering committee has
been charged with getting more data about these
future changes and their impact on Lake Ashton.
This group feels that proactive dialogue with
decision makers is needed now before the plans
are finalized, and would like to have residents of
Lake Ashton to join in on this endeavor. Residents
are encouraged to email ideas, suggestions, and
input of any kind (even just a note indicating your
support for this ef fort) to
LakeAshtonCommunityAction@gmail.com. A
community meeting for all residents is planned for
January to field concerns, questions, and ask for
help in bringing concerns to the attention of those
who are decision-makers. Look for the meeting
date in the January LA Times.
CONSERVATION AREAS
The conservation areas adjacent to some homes in
Lake Ashton are protected by a permit with the
Southwest Florida Water Management District
(SWFWMD). The clearing or trimming of any trees
or vegetation beyond rear property lines is
prohibited as these conservation areas lie within
LACDD (District) property. The permit identifies
the District as the sole manager of these areas, and
as such, the District is responsible for maintaining
them in their natural state in perpetuity per the
permit. These areas were part of the original
integral design of the community and cannot be
altered from their native state. In addition to

WHAT IS A
STORMWATER
RETENTION POND?
photos by Dennis Krupinski
Stormwater ponds are man
made features located in your
neighborhood. Retention ponds
are sometimes mistaken for
lakes. Retention ponds play a
unique role in managing surface
water quantity and quality. Stormwater retention
ponds are designed and constructed to reduce
flooding during high water periods – they are not
designed to hold water on a regular basis. They also
trap sediments and other large solids carried by runoff
from roads, parking lots and lawns. In addition to
sediments, stormwater ponds also collect a number of
other pollutants such as bacteria, oils, fertilizers, heavy
metals and organic contaminants such as animal
wastes, pesticides and herbicides. The stagnant water
allows heavier contaminants, such as solids or metals,
to sink to the bottom of the pond and eventually
become bottom layer sediments. The retained water
naturally filters the contaminants and returns clean
water to nearby streams or wetlands. Some of the
retention ponds have outfall structures that allow the
water to slowly drain to another location.

The Northern Cardinal, a
familiar and favorite bird of many, adorns
numerous Christmas cards this time of year.
Mrs. Cardinal may not be a Christmas-cardcover
bird like her husband, but she is a subtle
beauty in her own right with lovely hues of
olive and tan tinged with red. She is one of the
few female North American songbirds that
actually sings! Many Lake Ashton residents do
not realize what a common year-round bird this
is in Florida. Residents who landscape with
native plants, providing natural cover in their
backyards, could be treated with a nesting
pair. However, be prepared for them to attack
their reflections in your house windows or your
car's mirrors. It can be a battle to get them to
stop their daily attacks once they have spotted
a supposed interloper! Northern Cardinals are
easily seen at Bok Tower Gardens at the bird
feeder near the Window by the Pond.

gLA LOOKS
LA ( LW) HOA CORNER
By Keith Stevens
May your holiday season be one of the best ever for you and your family. For your
board of directors, the holiday season is one of the busiest of the entire year.
Annual assessment invoices must be sent and details of the coming annual
meeting and election must be finalized. In addition, this year there is preparation
for the vote by members on proposed changes to the Covenants, Conditions, and
Restrictions (CC&Rs). It is expected for that vote to be at the annual meeting in
February. The board and its legal counsel are working with the CC&R committee
to put the final text in order and to assure that the voting procedure will be in accord with Florida law and
the Lake Ashton governing documents.
The board approved the annual budget at the November board meeting. The budget for fiscal 2022 will be
$60,983. A copy of the budget is available for the asking at the HOA office or by calling the HOA office at
863.325.0065. The annual assessment will be $60, the same as last year. Lake Wales HOA members will be
receiving their assessment invoice in December. Payment is due January 1 and assessments not paid by
February 15 will be considered late and be subject to a late fee of $25 plus interest and administrative fees.
Lake Ashton has an exemplary history of very few late payments. The delinquency rate for assessments in
the community is usually less than one percent. It's another reason Lake Ashton is "simply the best".
The management company, Don Asher & Associates, will be sending out the assessment statements with a
coupon to mail in your payment. Alternately, for those who have set-up their on-line account on the Lake
Ashton website, they can pay via credit card. Credit card payments will be assessed a small convenience fee.
For those who have not set-up their on-line account, please contact admin@lakeashtonhoa.org if you desire
to create your online account.
In addition to the year-end tasks, the regular tasks continue. The compliance focus for December is mold,
mildew and stains. Compliance officers will be looking at homes, awnings, driveways and the like for
evidence of stains and mildew or mold
that should be cleaned. The board
thanks the Members for their
cooperation in addressing and
correcting issues found in the monthly
compliance focus.
This is also the season to consider
volunteering to become a director for
the HOA board. If you would like to
nominate someone for director or you
would like to volunteer to serve,
please contact the HOA office
(863.325.0065) or contact nomination
committee chair David Greer. Again,
happy holidays from your HOA Board
of Directors.

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH
By Fay Wood, NW Chief
Safety On Wheels (Courtesy of Law Enforcement)
Being safe in our vehicle is important, but also
avoiding issues that could make us a target for
criminal activity. A few simple ways to stay safe:
• Always roll up the windows and lock your doors
when you leave your car
• Glance inside of the vehicle prior to opening the
door to be sure nothing is amiss.
• If you think someone is following do not go home
—drive to the nearest police or fire station to get
help.
• Do not pick up hitchhikers (and never hitchhike).
• When stopping at a light, leave enough room
between you and the vehicle in front in case
someone approaches in a threatening manner
and you need to pull out!
• Drivers get angry if someone tailgates or cuts
them off. Let a tailgater pass. Don’t be drawn in
to a “test of wills”.

LA NINERS
By Diane Struble
November 2021 was a whirlwind of
fun activities for the Niners.
November 3rd was the second week
of the fall drive for the senior orphans
of Polk County - manageable size
cleaning supplies were requested. Bev Cornelius
was very grateful for the support and a huge
THANK YOU for all who participated. In the spring
there will be the opportunity once again to help
senior orphans. What a great way to lend a helping
hand to those who have an income
of less than $800 per month. The
Niners also participated in the
Nightmare on the Lake Haunted
House. Everyone who came through
had lots of laughs, a few scares, and
plenty of candy. The Pink Ribbon
Tournament on November 9 gave 250+ golfers a
fun day of golf, fellowship and memories with all
proceeds going to the Watson Clinic in Lakeland.
The Niners had nearly two-thirds of the members
participate in the event. The holiday luncheon is
December 7 — old fashioned food, fellowship, and
a few surprises is a great way to start your holiday
season. Anyone interested in joining the Niners can
call Karen at 207-451-0143.

University and West Virginia University. She was
an educator at the elementary, secondary and
post-secondary levels and holds multiple degrees.
She met her husband Al at a dance at the Elks Club
and they will be married 32 years this Thanksgiving

grandchildren ages 4 and 10. She has been a
snowbird since 2019 in Lake Ashton and has
owned several homes, renovating each one. She is
the true “energizer bunny.”
She fell in love with the entrance to Lake Ashton,
and feels like she is living in Paradise. “The people
are friendly and I have met so many good people
through golf,” according to Gina. She loves golfing
and only started playing seven years ago. Sharon
Woods invited her to play with the LALGA and
voilà, she is a member! Gina has many hobbies but
her face lights up when talking about cruising.
Both she and Al love to cruise and have enjoyed
visiting many unique countries and cultures. In
addition to cruising and golf, Gina LOVES the
weather in Florida, dancing, reading, socializing
with friends and walking. Welcome to Lake Ashton,
Gina! The LALGA is glad you have decided to join
in the fun!

party will begin with cocktails at 4:30 pm. A cash bar
and heavy hors d’oeuvres will be available. All party
guests are asked to bring an unwrapped toy for a girl

The browns, oranges, and yellows of Fall are being
replaced by the greens and reds of Christmas and the
blues and whites of Hanukkah. Lake Ashton residents
are decorating their homes and community to
celebrate and LA Rockers are busily painting holiday
rocks to donate to a local nursing home and to hide

lucky ones who finds a beautiful treasure to keep or
pass on. If you are looking to get
together, make friends, and learn
something different, come to the HFC
ballroom on alternate Wednesdays from
2 to 4 pm to meet a great group of
people and learn to paint rocks. It’s free!
No need for first timers to make a huge

Pictured are a few

Swim Club during one
of our occasional
Wacky Wednesdays. The club tries to make swim
workouts fun. On Wacky days, no one swims anything
normal, and swimmers are encouraged to dress
wacky, too. Everyone still gets a good workout.
The group wishes fast swims to those who have
qualified to represent Lake Ashton in the Florida
Senior Games Swimming Championships in Ft.
Lauderdale in December! GO State Games swimmers!
Special notice to all residents 50 & over. Right after
the holidays a new Senior Games season begins.
Almost every month from January to December there
is a senior games swim meet somewhere in Florida.
Those club members who use competition as a way
to stay motivated to stay fit are leaning toward
several meets each year that are within reasonable
driving distance. Most are preparing to participate in
our own Polk County Games at the end of February
or beginning of March (to be announced soon). For
those not familiar, Senior Games Swimming offers 14
events of varying distances from 50 to 500 yards. All
events are divided by gender and age groups
(divided into 5 year increments). Medals are awarded
for the top 3 finishers in each. The club would like to
take a big team to the Polk County Games this year
to show the organizers (and sponsors) that what they
do is appreciated, especially since many games were
cancelled last year due to COVID. So, whether you
train with this group or on your own, it would be nice
to enter as a Lake Ashton team. If you are interested,
please contact Coach Sandy via e-mail at
sandyw1994@aol.com or call 302- 383-7176.
Everyone is invited to come get in shape and have fun
with the club. Organized workouts are held Mondays
at 6 pm, Wednesdays at 1:45 pm, and Saturdays at 10
am at the HFC Indoor Pool.
LAKE ASHTON PICKLEBALL
ASSOCIATION
By Calvin Eakins
Meet the Board Officers of the Lake Ashton
Pickleball Association (LAPA):
President, Calvin Eakins
Vice President, Chuck Caesar
Treasurer, Lisa Savala
Pickleball is a worldwide, fast growing sport, for all
ages, with 4.5 million people playing in the United
States. Here at Lake Ashton, the LAPA has
approximately 150 members. The Association is
growing fast as more people become interested in
this sport and new residents arrive. To join LAPA,
go to the Clubhouse with a check, (no cash or
credit cards) made out to LAPA for $10 for a year
membership. You don’t have to be a member to
play, but the funds help the LAPA. This money is
used to provide balls, paddle holders, wind socks
and other supplies as needed. You will also receive
email blasts concerning anything related to LAPA.
The pickleball courts are an amenity of Lake
Ashton, but the LAIICDD doesn’t supply equipment
for pickleball.
There are currently four courts on the West side of
Lake Ashton, next to the HFC. Everyone is
welcome to learn and play. Calvin occasionally gives
lessons. Just watch for email blasts and look in the
LA Times for future dates. You could also come
down to Courts 1 and 2 and watch beginner play
on Tuesdays and Thursday from 7:30 to 9 am.
Open play is every day on all courts starting at 7:30
am, except for those times set aside for beginners
on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Open play is when
everyone mixes playing with everyone on the
courts, all levels of play. If you have a group that
you want to play with, it should be after 10 am. If
you want to use more than one court, please check
with Calvin or one of the other board members to
make sure they are open, and not scheduled for
ladies or men teams practice, or another group
play. Looking forward to seeing you on the courts!
